I love Pantera, but the comparison with Meshuggah doesn't hold up; Pantera was a post-thrash band, while Meshuggah goes beyond the strictly metal sphere. And just compare the solos—with all due respect to the late Dimebag, but Thordendal is in another galaxy!!!!!!!

Stoney, listen to these bands to get an idea of the evolution that metal underwent in the 90s: Meshuggah, Tool, Martyr, Cryptopsy, Death, Atheist, Cynic, and Dillinger Escape Plan.

And then for the record, King Crimson is cited as an influence by Meshuggah.

The only album by Meshuggah where the drums are programmed is Catch 33, and yes, King Crimson lasted 40 years, but they were broken up for practically half of their career. Also, duration doesn’t mean quality; take the Rolling Stones, for example—they haven’t made a remotely significant album in over 25 years. On the other hand, take Atheist, for instance; they lasted less than 10 years and released only 3 albums, but those 3 albums are worth 30. Bye.

Meshuggah are to the 90s what King Crimson are to the 70s. Both bands, in their respective genres and historical-musical contexts, have made a true revolution.
