The adventure of the characters carrying the ring is almost secondary, as it’s clear that that funny little thing called Frodo will make it; you can tell from the first line. But look at this joker Tolkien, he wrote a book where what seems like a perfectly normal adventure is actually the background, and what is commonly the background is in fact the true protagonist of the novel. Otherwise, do you think it’s silly that he devoted an entire chapter to Tom Bombadil, who is completely unrelated to the story? He didn’t write this novel in two days, you know?
