Count, I agree with this analysis, but that doesn't change (for me) the fact that ballads is a beautiful album (it's not a step forward as you rightly say) but it's a nice nuance that we might never have heard if it weren't for John, and this is, for me, a credit to the producer but also to Trane (and his companions) who managed to make an excellent album (not trivial) by accommodating the producer.
