Mmmm well... I understand that you might not like his more recent vocal style, that’s perfectly fine, in fact, you wouldn't even be the only one; many people, for instance, lament his performance in Arcturus (which, by the way, I understand you’re not familiar with) and view his new warmer, more relaxed timbre as a flattening... Nothing to argue about; it’s a matter of tastes/emotions. But really, try to mash up Garm from "Shadows of the Sun" and "Wars of the Roses" (dark, whispered, enveloping, for example this YouTube video non trovatovEIxieAinKg) into any medallion piece, "melodic death" as you suggest (or in the link posted by Decline)... It would be like slathering a jar of hazelnut cream onto a big fatty Big Mac complete with fries! :D In short, it doesn’t relate to metal (power, death, melodic death power, whatever) and to the theatricality TECHNICALLY speaking... After all, the late '90s/early 2000s was precisely when Ulver started disregarding metal stuff and similar. I find it hard to understand how the "melodic death metal" conversation could have come up in a discussion about Ulver. :D

Among all the reviews of this album published from the early days of Debasio to today, this is the best... At least it’s a bit more descriptive and clear. The others are unbearable (actually one, even copied from that idiot BathoryAria, isn't even there anymore). Anyway, I agree, get ready for the rain of 1! :D

But what do you mean by "metal debtor"? To me, Garm's voice in the last two albums has seemed very personal and intimate; honestly, at this point, it would clash in a fully-fledged metal album... It is very distant from the one in "The Sham Mirrors" or "La Masquerade Infernale", just to make an example.

Thank you all for the various opinions. "Wars" will certainly not receive the same acclaim as "Shadows" (just take a look around the web) and, as The Decline rightly says, dubbing an album like this was unthinkable. Among other things, it's so beautiful that Ulver decided not to detach themselves too much; in fact, it's the first time they’ve written an album drawing on the atmosphere of the previous one (try to think of "Blood Inside," "Perdition City," "Shadows," "William Blake"; they have little to nothing in common, and the same goes for the black/folk period)... <<One thing is certain: this album will divide the audience and critics. And only the greats can really do that.>> I agree! ... Nes, I wouldn't know what to tell you, I'm sorry you didn't appreciate it, but on the other hand, having listened to it fleetingly half a time (maybe even the rip in terrible quality that was circulating not long ago) and then promptly discarded, you can't even say that you tried! I believe it had the same effect more or less on everyone at first listen; then it's just a matter of time, and one decides accordingly whether to grant it or not. Opel, it’s better not to mention "Perdition City" in my presence, I might have an overwhelming attack of violent orgasms!! :D

Thanks to Progrock for the important clarification regarding the label! @Gemini: be careful though, don't get your hopes up too high, I'm also crazy about Shadows but my first listens of Wars left me confused... You just have to give it time!

Actually, no, this one is better I hate those pseudo-videos with silly pictures... The cover is more than enough.

Hi Luca, well oh dear in this EP they are not exactly joking, but I hope it’s just an isolated case and not a direction to take... "Virstele Pamintului" (which I highly recommend!) is instead the ideal evolution of "OM", definitely softer and more atmospheric, but never inconsistent! We’ll see what they come up with in the future... In the meantime, I take this opportunity to share the best track from Negura and one of the most beautiful I’ve ever heard: Il Tessitore Di Luci Negura could have written "OM" just with this, and filled the remaining 54 minutes with farts and burps, and for me, it would still have been a divine album...

For me, it was the hardest Kozelek/Sun Kil Moon album to digest... But in the end, it's also the one that gave me the most satisfaction. I agree that it’s quite long and verbose, which doesn’t make it very accessible at all. 4.5
