I was doing it myself... And I basically wrote your exact same things, so I can only agree from start to finish :D "The Death of Love" is really cheesy, but there are some tracks ("Tragic Kingdom," "Shat Out of Hell," "Honey and Sulphur," and a couple of others) that I really didn't expect from Cradle. More than anything, I had resigned myself to the idea of having to listen to another pretentious mush like "Thornography," and instead... I was partially surprised simply because I expected much worse. We're not at the level of "Dusk..," obviously, but GOTDT far exceeds its two predecessors, and this is (in my opinion) a sign of recovery - though weak. Anyway, well done Defender.
