I reinsert myself.. Pained to have sparked the discussion about suites and then abandoned it, however.. I don't believe that the conversation about improvisation can make a suite greater or lesser: architectural works meticulously crafted like those of Yes are neither less nor more than pieces like Nine Feet or Lady Fantasy, where improvisation is more evident.. On the other hand, in these last two cases, we're talking about Canterbury sound, which is very different from that of the "Magical Triangle" Genesis, King Crimson, Yes.. Progressive music has the great fortune of being a genre with some fixed points but quite elastic boundaries, where one can practically find anything.. I don’t mean to say it’s a gigantic stew, but it is certainly among the most vibrant genres precisely because it is never the same as itself. Perhaps this magmatic characteristic eventually led to its demise, but it has also made it a true gold mine.. Studio-crafted suites and long instrumental improvisations can very well coexist as long as both head in the same direction of transcending the norms of time, instrumentation, way of playing, etc.. My quintessential suite remains Valentyne Suite, which in my opinion marvelously blends improvisation and design; let's not forget the aforementioned Lizard, which I believe is among the best works of the King, hands down..

I’ll butt in.. I don’t agree that Supper's Ready is the ultimate suite.. There are several others that give it a run for its money, like Lizard or Close To The Edge..
