It is indeed impossible to disregard tastes, and frankly, I don't even care about them... :) Although the APCs were nothing more than a showcase for sound techniques and Maynard's melodic abilities, I don't shy away from transplanting that way of singing into Tool as well; it simply seems like an expansion of his expressive range to me. He sings like that and how he sang before, depending on the situation; even though there is undeniably a slight softening of the overall aggression of the group. My favorite moment of Lateralus is Jones' solo on Reflection.

Music is expressiveness, above all, the kind that can ooze from both a highly technical and cerebral record and from a wild jam by the Rolling Stones, which I adore. (Especially the fiery blues of the '60s). I refer you to some posts by Rikardo on the critical/artistic consideration of a musical phenomenon. In general, the problem is that in literature those who speak are the literati, while in music, everyone has something to say. And that’s how false historical narratives are created.

In my opinion, the only disappointing thing about that album is, in the long run, "vicarious." Keenan sings divinely on the two wings, in the intro of "the pot" (an easy but beautiful piece, despite the blatant plagiarism in the bass line of "let there be more light" by Floyd...), in "jambi," and in the final piece; I don't miss the vocal lines from the old albums at all (the choruses of "aenima," for example, are all very similar). At most, I can lament a certain grandiloquence and the production being a bit too polished. But for the rest, I consider it an almost masterpiece as well. Then again, to each their own, of course..

Well, I would say that the literary concepts (this time they pull out Hesse's Steppenwolf..) are a bit outdated, especially in the guise of refined (but not necessarily erudite) chamber music, which today is a tad (conceptually) reactionary. However, the reception is still excellent.
