Seen not once, not twice, but three times! One of those films that should be shown in schools, to the older students obviously, and with the right historical and cultural context. I liked the phrase "..in Romania one of the worst dictatorial regimes ever imagined was in power, established under the pretext, and I emphasize pretext, of communism...". I ALSO EMPHASIZE the term PRETEXT. Beautiful review, beautiful film. I don’t want to say something foolish, but they screened it several times among the "Bellissimi" on Rete4 °_°

@HIGHLANDE: I completely agree with you about the inherent criticality of using social themes, thus serious ones, as the basis for comedy films. The real risk is making everything SERIOUS; the danger is that everything might be taken as a game! Personally, I believe that such a film could have been avoided precisely because the character played by Albanese: a) seems repetitive and outdated; b) doesn't hold up throughout the film (I agree with PIXIES77 regarding the lack of rhythm); c) seems to diminish the potential of the comedic genre itself; d) above all, IT DOES NOT PROVIDE A TRUE AND UNDERSTANDABLE OUTCRY FOR EVERYONE! We always return to the same discussion: perhaps it's better to make a straightforward denunciation, as seen in "Il caimano" and those explosive final minutes...

@MADCAT: I simply didn’t try them myself when leaving the room; I honestly saw a lot of people present in the room almost run away, tired after the last scenes. Perhaps, like me, these people felt a bit of disappointment. Just to give you a note, the only thing that stuck in my friends' minds from the whole film was the little song "Onda calabra," which they also use to tease me.. °_°

Having read all the comments, I find it difficult to create a collage of the viewpoints I share with each person. I completely agree with the last note by TURKISH. As for the review, I consider it adequate. Although personally, unease, bitterness, and anger are generated for me by other genres of film: in my limited cinematic experience, I think of "The Pianist," "Letters from Iwo Jima," or, returning to Benigni mentioned in comment 13, "Life is Beautiful," as well as other films that are not necessarily about war. Regarding the film, I've admired Albanese since I was a child, and I also appreciate Rubini's versatility in his performances; I find the film well acted, but I consider it too caricatured! The underworld and misgovernment down in Calabria are quite different; unfortunately, those who live it know this. In Italy, well, we won't even get started! A suggestion for Antonio Albanese: maybe it's time to change character... perhaps a Padanian? :-)

@TEENAGELOBOTOMY: I'm sorry to say that I rate the review as barely sufficient, because it's made on the wings of that enthusiasm which leads to being a bit imprecise in content and in the quality of its execution. I’ll round it up to sufficient anyway. As for the film, I saw it too long ago, I definitely should watch it again. Although placing it among the top 10 of the '90s seems a bit daring to me based on what I remember... @MIKE76: I generally think that French cinema has a lot to teach; I find it too underrated (and you should know that I've only "sampled" it with a few second or third viewings!).

@AXEL: Is your comment directed at me? "Milanese who thinks he is from the South"?

Passing through San Luca sends shivers down my spine; I couldn’t wait to escape! I was born and live in Milan, but I am proudly Calabrian. It really makes me sad to see how certain actions, like considering even the slightest enterprise, are deemed impossible by the younger generation there, and how almost everyone lowers their heads and conforms. I come from the countryside, and every time I visit towns like Lamezia Terme or various cities such as Catanzaro or Reggio, I can’t wait to return home; urbanization there (or perhaps in most areas of the South) follows the absurdities driven by the phenomena of organized crime and misgovernment. Now, the capital of this criminal movement, certainly the most frightening in Italy, is here in my areas. And politics is fully involved, considering that everything is becoming, as you imply in your excellent review, a political game. The Lega Nord has started to see an overwhelming surge in votes in Lombardy (and not just there) not only from those who no longer want foreigners or from "federalists" but especially from people "tired of the capital Rome," which can’t manage politics and the fight against these phenomena born in the South. It’s a shame that everything is clearly supported by entrepreneurs, politicians, or figures clearly from the North. P.S. I would also like to know how many have actually understood the proposal for federalism that will soon be voted on. I am not against it, on the contrary, but I believe it is not the right time! And I repeat, WHAT PROPOSAL WILL BE VOTED ON? I see FISCAL FEDERALISM as SUICIDE! Moreover, I view it as a hostile and murderous act against the South, which would be left in the hands of organized crime!
