Hi Fenrir, welcome. I consider black metal far removed from the stereotypes of traditional metal, which is a continuation of rock, and thus of so-called "pop" music. I see black metal roughly divided into two streams: one more rock-oriented, traditional, and metallic (Mayhem, Emperor, Darkthrone, Cradle of Filth) and another introspective, intimate, without concerts and tied to the individual dimension (Burzum, Xasthur, Nargaroth, Leviathan, Silencer...). Honestly, while I classify both groups as black metal, I find the second group more authentic, truly alternative, not in the extreme sense (of the first stream), but from a conceptual standpoint. That's why I get upset when people think that black metal is music for idiots (like Enthroned - I rated the album a 4 because that's the right score for the music) just because someone talks about dragons and the like. There you go.
