I'm sorry, Hal, it may all seem like nonsense to you, but that phrase didn't come out of nowhere, considering we’ve been discussing this matter from the first post to the review. If you think that art must be forcibly linked to a social utility, a political or philosophical message, you're implicitly excluding all those forms that have drawn their vital spirit from the necessity to "release" something, which might be considered useless on a socio-political level. But how on earth can you think that art must always have these secondary purposes? In this way, you destroy the very concept of art. I may be "romantic," but I still believe in "art for art's sake." Damn, I didn't think of it earlier; kosmogabri was really spot-on and sharp to include Wagner in the discussion... especially considering what he did in the operas, from this perspective.
