If you then tell me that Black Sabbath were fundamental to the birth of metal, then there’s no doubt about it. It’s a different matter to say that Black Sabbath were metal.

For heaven's sake, I don't pretend to change your mind, I just want to understand. I certainly don't have the musical culture of Rive (who only knows N.I.B. from the debut and has never heard the name Robert Johnson) and I don't listen to Miles Davis. My musical knowledge is much more modest.

There's just one thing I don't understand, sorry if I'm being stubborn, but I fundamentally don't get what's different from the first album to the second? What is the substantial difference? Thank you.

Robert Johnson constantly and obsessively spoke of the devil in his lyrics; his music was dark, and the thumb that functioned as both bass and drums was relentless. Was he metal? Only time will tell.

So, is metal now a matter of atmospheres? A state of mind, I would almost say. So, are Whitesnake not metal? Is it necessary to have that? Honestly, I see the lyrics, while incredibly important, as not suitable for classifying the musical genre, since for all singers the voice is not an instrument, except for Wyatt and Tim Buckley.

A certain Mick Jagger claimed to be Satan himself, if I'm not mistaken.

I repeat that Heaven And Hell comes exactly 10 years later, and it’s metal, we agree. This album is Paranoid. Maybe you could take Hand Of Doom as an example of Doom, don’t you think? Those heavy riffs don’t seem to be exclusive to Iommi nor do I think they’re missing from the debut of Black Sabbath, quite the opposite, I’d say. N.I.B., Wicked World, The Wizard, Black Sabbath, etc. What’s the highlight? The novelty that makes it metal and different from Machine Head or Led Zeppelin 2? What I really can’t understand is your definition of metal. The dark riffs were already there. I’m thinking of Iron Butterfly in 1968, Cream’s Politician, Blue Cheer. So, is Ozzy’s voice what makes the album metal? No longer Billy Ward? And what’s different about it? So, just singing that way, even if you’re playing a mazurka, makes the song metal?

And I believe it's offensive to the Black Sabbath themselves to say that Paranoid is metal. But by now there is too much confusion. I even saw Angus Young come in third on the list of best metal guitarists, so I'm not surprised.
