Soundgarden Down on the Upside
Voto:
Blessed are you, donjunio, for having seen Kyuss alongside Soundgarden. I was talking about it a while ago with the grimy and psychopompe; the latter had the same luck as you... At most, I saw QOTSA with guest Mark Lanegan (they were still a great band) and the fleeting Audioslave, who I liked quite a bit at the time but were nothing more than a flash in the pan. Anyway, the scarcity of ideas present here is also found, and in a more consistent measure, in Euphoria Morning, Chris Cornell's solo debut, a soporific and anonymous album where you can hear a sad (sometimes very sad) resurrection of his past with Temple Of The Dog.

Surely their worst album, decent but nothing more, light-years away from the captivating austerity of Louder and also from Superunknown, which is professional and mature. With this, Soundgarden definitively emptied the bag, gifting a handful of beautiful songs (Down On The Upside and Burden In My Hand among them) and a plethora of lackluster filler tracks, characterized by haphazard syncopations that become tedious over time (Rhinosaur, Never The Machine Forever). We are still talking about a superlative band; I strongly hope for a reunion, at least to have the chance to see them live.

These have always intrigued me quite a bit, but since I live in an area with a digital divide, I can't download anything at all. And in music stores, it's already a miracle if I can find any albums by Soundgarden, let alone materials by bands that have faded into obscurity. Good review anyway.

I don’t know this bootleg, but I’m familiar with the songs it contains. If the variations are minimal as you mentioned, then it’s not an urgent curiosity. Anyway, well done, excellent writing. I fully agree with everything you said about Tool, one of the most interesting bands in modern rock. Does anyone have any news about them? Not long ago, Chancellor mentioned that they wouldn’t wait another 5 years for a new album...

It's true, I had forgotten God's Dice among the good creations of the sole Ament. However, as good as it is, it’s not the standout episode of Binaural (which I consider a great, mature, and underrated album); that honor belongs to the already mentioned Nothing As It Seems and the cultured and intelligent punk of Insignificance (but neither Thin Air nor Of The Girl by Gossard should be dismissed, quite the opposite...). As for Help Help, it’s worth mentioning in partial defense of our guy that Riot Act, in general, isn't much to write home about. Anyway, I made a mistake yesterday in rating the review; it should have been a 5.

Oh come on, he's doing a solo album too?! I didn't know that... I'll try to get it because I'm curious, even though I have to say I'm a bit skeptical about Ament as a songwriter. I've never heard Three Fish, but aside from the beautiful Nothing As It Seems, I don't find his songs for Pearl Jam that great (Pilate, Low Light, Help Help,...). Great review!

I'm sorry, but this time I didn't like it. You hardly say anything about the album, the dichotomies you mentioned are rather pointless, and some are even very unlikely (what do Led Zeppelin have to do with Pink Floyd and Nirvana with Guns'n'Roses?). I hope to read you again... In the meantime... Sorry, but...

I know that no one forced me to do it, but I regret and lament having read this review!

"...all that matters is the impact and the emotion, and Justin Hawkins and his band have given me plenty of emotions and continue to do so": sure, you settle for little. You might not care at all that they are derivative and copycats, but don’t go writing that their sound is unmatchable, given that it itself is an imitation of an imitation. The Queen are unmatchable, not these clowns! Anyway, you’ve improved in writing; if I may offer you some advice, make the most of it to review more deserving works than this junk. So this time I won't vote for you and I’m waiting to see your improvements applied to something serious.
