Incredible how fate can intervene in the history of the world... if McDonald and Giles hadn’t gotten fed up with working with Robert Fripp, do you think masterpieces like Lizard, Islands, Larks' Tongues, and the above-mentioned would have been released? Considering when the tracks on this album were composed, one must acknowledge their innovativeness... In any case, it's not an absolutely unmissable album and pales in comparison to the subsequent albums of the King, but still a good attempt! What I dislike is the structure of the suite: it feels like many fragments stitched together... without cement! Beautiful, though, is "Suite in C."

Welcome. From your review, it’s clear that you really love Queen, and from the album you chose to review, it's understandable that you haven't settled for a more superficial knowledge of the underrated Queen (Underrated by most critics, not by the fans!).
People often have a really stereotypical idea of what this modest group produced, which, before being swept away by more renowned pop, created quality albums like Queen 2 and A Night at the Opera.
If you want some advice, I strongly suggest you start listening to a bit of Progressive; you'll see that you'll understand where Queen 2 came from and pieces like My Fairy King or The Night Comes Down...
If you want some tips, add me to your MSN contacts at mearini91@hotmail.it. Bye bye!

To Hetzer: you're right... de gustibus non disputandum est... but I assure you that someone who places a song like "Starless" at the top... well... should definitely wonder why a gem like "Pawn Hearts" or, in general, all of Hammill's music doesn't communicate anything... I mean... the music of VDGG is not just music... don't listen to it merely as a sequence of musical notes... rather, understand its deeper meaning... as you've rightly pointed out... "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" is a collection of various sections... but if you pay total attention, you'll realize they're not disconnected, but they outline a beautiful depiction of human solitude... listen carefully... and then, if you want some advice... you lovers of Hammill... buy the following book "Dark Figures Running": with all the translated lyrics of the generator... accompanied by notes explaining their meaning... you'll see it's worth it...
