Steve Vai Sound Theories Tour 2007 - Roma

Look, no one is saying that Vai is better than Zappa; under this sun, there's room for everyone. I've already said it, there’s no point in comparing Zappa to Vai, the differences between the two are too great. What I wanted to say is that it seems to me there's too much bitterness on your part towards Vai, that’s all. And don't come here lecturing me on the history of music because people like Varese (or Schoenberg) I know and have appreciated for a lifetime, but that doesn’t stop me from appreciating Vai, or Michael Hedges, or Shawn Lane, or Fripp, or Prince, or Blackmore... less aggressiveness is good for everyone; we're here to discuss: then each of us listens to what we like most...

Dear know-it-all, Frank has always held Steve Vai in high esteem, frequently calling him to collaborate. I can understand that someone might not like Vai, but the judgments you express seem a bit too biased and far from reality. That Zappa is one of the greatest geniuses in the history of music seems to be a given, but saying Vai is a hack or can't compose, etc., seems a bit exaggerated. Vai's eccentricity is based on nonsense and exaggeration; it's certainly not as engaged and cultured as Zappa's, but it's nonetheless a deliberate choice.

#there is
I believe there is a bit of a difference between my comment and #39: first of all, I didn't offend anyone, and second, I tried to motivate my ideas. Of course, everything is up for debate, but it always makes me smile to see that there are people who, when it comes to music, start insulting and attacking left and right... The bottom line is that Vai's music is difficult to listen to, and there's no denying that, but it remains brilliant music: in my opinion, playing the solo of For The God Of Love or the riff of Honky Tonk Women like Keith Richards with two "simple open strings" is the same, as both are incredibly difficult and genius at the same time.

Ah, I almost forgot, comment #39 is so ignorant that it reaches the level of vulgarity: how can one write such nonsense? There's really not much to do; when ideology is involved, you're not only blind but also deaf...

Steve Vai is simply a genius: his knowledge of music and his instrument is so elevated that sometimes it can indeed come off as boring or difficult to understand, there's nothing to do about it. Musically, he exists on another planet compared to most guitarists out there. When it comes to his look and attitude, that’s another story: Steve plays to the scene, offering the audience a grand spectacle, pushing everything to the limit, including his flashy appearance. And this has been one of the great lessons he learned from Zappa. As for the concert, I wasn’t there, so I can’t say anything, but every time I’ve seen Vai live, I’ve been completely satisfied (the only exception being in 2003 at Alcatraz, which was a bit dull). His concert in 2001 at Alcatrazz was amazing, truly hair-raising! By the way, I personally prefer other musicians (for instance, Satriani has much more feeling and seems definitely more human), but Vai is indeed an alien, and sometimes a bit more humility would be needed when commenting on certain things, especially from those who shoot judgments left and right and then end up spending their evenings playing in some pathetic cover band at a pub. In short, it’s fine to vent one’s frustration against the greats, but let’s not exaggerate… and yes, tastes are personal, and we can all agree on that. One last thing: how was Zack Wiesinger? I’ve heard a lot of good things about him but I’ve never heard him play...

David Cronenberg Eastern Promises
Voto:
For the first time, I watch a film by the master and I am totally disappointed: a flat and trivial plot, ridiculous and predictable psychological insights, flat and mediocre actors (except for Cassel, who proves to be really good, that damned Frenchman). In short, if it had been made by any other director, I could have settled for it (great action scene and aesthetically perfect cinema, sure), but not from Cronenberg. Is he starting to lose his touch too?!?!!

I was in Assago 15 days ago, and I must say it was one of the best Maiden concerts I've ever seen (my first time: Reggio Emilia '92). Beautiful review that oozes all the love fans have for this incredible band: perhaps only Deep Purple can convey so much heart and joy when they play live. The Maiden live create an almost symbiotic relationship with their fans; it’s something truly unique. They may be liked or disliked, but that’s another story... By the way, I'm already anxious for the Somewhere Back in Tour... see you in Bologna on June 27th.
