"Fading Lights," the last masterpiece of the band.
It shines isolated and unexpected, almost incongruous, after heaps of catchy tunes and trinkets. In it, the right Collins excels, that is, the drummer, while he lets loose for a good five minutes for the last time in his life.
He pounds hard, determined and full of drive, burying the electronic drum machine that had been wreaking havoc with rolls and splashes, while accentuating with jazz flavor behind the ingenious musings of his partner Banks on the massive synthesizer.
A slightly annoying touch, on the "bridge" of the track (which recycles three times), is the blatant nod to the ancient "Ripples" from "A Trick of the Tail."
What a pity, they could have produced hours of this "commercial progressive" like "Fading Lights." Instead, nothing... the rest is all crap for kids and distracted listeners with sweet teeth.

I simply adore them! My sacred trimurti of progressive is not the classic one (Genesis, Yes, Crimson), but rather Genesis, Gentle Giant, Saga (the latter two being somewhat limited by the progressive label). I have my priorities regarding the discography of GG: this album, undoubtedly excellent and especially surprising for its time, still feels a bit out of focus and lacks the melodic, rhythmic, and contrapuntal consistency of the four/five albums that follow it chronologically. My current ranking (though I might occasionally shuffle a few positions...) is: 1) Three Friends, 2) Free Hand, 3) Octopus, 4) Acquiring the Taste, 5) In a Glass House.

for me it’s 1) Octopus; 2) Acquiring the taste; 3) Three Friends; 4) Free Hands, but they are nuances.
