Grandpa Woody here sings his love for New York, for the cinema of the past (there are several references to Fellini, Bergman, and Kubrick) and directs and stars in a work that is irreverent but politically "incorrect," where Allen's classic themes blend with a poetic quality of images that is excellently rendered in black and white. One of Allen's best. (8.5)
