Van Der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Composite album from one of the fundamental bands of the progressive genre Made in UK. The record features three tracks (and in the 2005 reissue also some more or less interesting bonus tracks). Long symphonic sessions where Peter Hammill's band showcases all their compositional skills and musical knowledge. Unfortunately, I couldn't appreciate it as much as it deserves. The best moments for me are in the second track, 'Men-Erg', at times acidic like the MC5 might sound, although here we are obviously talking about something quite different.

@[Battlegods], no way, I guess me and this type of sound will never meet. :)

No worries. I realize that we’re talking about an album that is considered, and probably rightly so, a cornerstone of the progressive genre in particular. But you have to understand that my rating is clearly my personal opinion and that I have no didactic intent or aim to give lessons to anyone. Frankly, I can't feel any emotion listening to this album; it leaves me absolutely nothing. I could even talk about boredom. No provocation, of course.

In fact, I even feel sorry to give him a low score and judge him so negatively, especially since my dear friend Battlegods warmly recommended him to me. However, I had previously mentioned that I’ve never really connected with the genre, so I suppose he’ll understand. :)

Look, there’s no problem, some milestones seem incomprehensible to me too... who mentioned grateful dead and joy division? :)

Of course. Fortunately, everyone has their own tastes. After all, I have to say I don't have any prejudices; I listened to the whole album, bonus tracks included. It's true, I expected that I might not like it, given that I've always had little affinity with the genre, but why not give it a listen anyway? I must say that I truly can't find any appreciation for this type of music, even preferring some commercial music episodes. What can I say, that's life. I do like the Grateful Dead and Joy Division though. :)

I like Joy Division too, but only a few tracks from each album. I've been listening to Closer since 1985, but my favorite tracks are just Atrocity Exhibition, A Means to an End, and Isolation... the rest I've never really appreciated too much.

You're right. De gustibus. Then it’s clear that your intent is not provocative or anything. However, I've still hired three professional hitmen for you. Sleep with one eye open.

I'm not a fanatic of Joy Division, though, so I understand you, but I do like them. Maybe it's because I haven't listened to them since 1985, who knows.

@[hjhhjij] (damn, I hope I tagged you correctly) I understand your threat. I've already gotten an eyepatch for my left eye or alternatively my right, so I can always use just one eye and assist you in your unscrupulous killing intent. ;)

Let’s reveal one of the three killers of hjhh: one is me dressed as a duck :) I'm super happy you listened to this masterpiece, but I can’t believe that the schizo attack at the 2-minute mark of "Man Erg" doesn’t mean anything to you, or the universe of "A plague..". Just to say, I’m not a fan of the Grateful, I much prefer CSN&Y and Jefferson :)

I recommend that you listen to it over and over again.

Another killer could only be @[tonysoprano], obviously. What can I say, guys, it's not at all excluded that I might revisit this. I don't feel like it at the moment, frankly speaking, but never say never; fortunately, musical tastes are volatile and all things can change.

Man-Erg is actually the episode that convinced me the most, as I said. I like CSN&Y, although I prefer Neil with the Crazy Horse. The Jeffersons don't drive me crazy, but they're okay for me.

The third is @[bluesboy94] now everyone knows it, and I’ll have to look for three more. Ugh.

Ahaha... I'm sure you won't have much trouble finding others. You'll sacrifice me as if I were Sergeant Howie from 'The Wicker Man'...

I am a killer...kindly though...I only use water guns...but I have Hammillian friends who are much, much more dangerous...luckily for you, they don’t roam the debasic world...

But what do the MC5 have to do with man-erg?
  • sotomayor

I simply let myself be deceived by the acidity of some passages, but as mentioned, we are talking about two radically different things. In fact, it's no coincidence that I like the MC5, and quite a lot.
Velvet Morning: Gorilla
File Audio I have it ★★★
Debut album from this very young band made in the UK, released last June on Exag' Records. An album of psychedelic music that, rather than relying on acid sounds, offers Slowdive-like suggestions and evocative atmospheres. The sounds could be likened to those of other established bands from the neo-psychedelic movement such as Stevenson Ranch Davidians or Quarter After, and Asteroid #4. The album title, 'Gorilla', might be misleading and suggest some aggressive sounds and clattering noise. Nothing of the sort: after all, even these big creatures have a heart and feelings. Here they are.
Verma: Mul.Apin
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Fourth studio album released via Trouble in Mind Records in November 2015 by the acid-psych band from Chicago, Verma. This album is sure to please enthusiasts of the psychedelic genre, especially those who love the spatial openings typical of kraut-rock and space music. Only five tracks on this record, but the last one, the long sixteen-minute session of 'Gal Damhara/Last Battle,' is worth the so-called price of admission on its own. It's an album that didn’t get much play last year and that I highly recommend: I definitely consider it among the must-listens for 2015 (and for anyone who may not have heard it back then, of course).
