Terry Lee Hale is Texan (and he feels it), but he lives in Europe in Marseille and recorded his album in Forlì with the production of Antonio Gramentieri and contributions from others in the Sacri Cuori circle. The album is a quality product, classy and arranged with style. The songs are obviously what we could define as classic made-in-USA ballads that have the desert or the landscapes of the frontier in the background. A 'genre' album in the strict sense, it doesn’t offer particular insights unless you are a big enthusiast or don’t particularly enjoy refined things.
It is the third and last studio album by the 13th Floor Elevators. Somehow overlooked by critics, it is in truth a good record that suffers, however, from the part-time presence of Tommy Hall and Roky Erickson, who certainly appears less charged compared to previous episodes. In contrast, the skills of a guitarist who has been a master in the blues psychedelia genre, like Stacy Sutherland, stand out perhaps more than in the two previous albums. It remains an essential complement in outlining the discography and the trajectory of what is clearly a seminal band in the realm of psychedelic rock.

I love this band and, in general, the whole Elephant 6 universe, but this record is, in my opinion, little more than mediocre. A 'bubblegum' album made up of very short songs, as is tradition for the band, with a particularly noisy vibe reminiscent of what could be the Pavement from their first album. Distorted guitars dominate along with a certain surf orientation in an album that is definitely catchy, but simply lacks those standout songs found in other releases from this band (and from the entire label, whose artists I always like to consider as a single package, a large and friendly collective). For me: a half misstep.
The Body: No One Deserves Happiness
File Audio Not intrested ★★
If I had to choose just one word for this album, it would be: destruction. The power of this duo (it will surely appeal to those accustomed to listening to metal or industrial music) annihilates heavy-psych bands like Pontiak or Arbouretum. Hallucinated to the brink, it forcefully pushes you into complete madness.
The Dwarfs of East Agouza: Bes
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
A record like this is and will always be a rare gem due to its unique characteristics. How often, out of a thousand times, can it happen that a record mixing genres like fusion, experimental jazz, psychedelia, and Tuareg traditions—drawing heavily from the legacy of the great Ali Farka Touré—can simultaneously provide an experience that strikes so dramatically? It’s no surprise that the trio includes, alongside Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi, Mr. Alan Bishop of the Sun City Girls, and perhaps it is his presence and guidance that make this work something so special and surprising, while also being accomplished and mature, therefore not merely a delirious riot of dancing burly and badass little demons (in every sense).
The Electric Prunes: Stockholm 67
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Unmissable live album by the Electric Prunes recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 14, 1967. Some versions of the tracks are practically unforgettable and maybe even superior to their original studio recordings. I especially want to highlight a stunning version of 'Try Me On for Size,’ while the one for 'Smokestack Lighting' perhaps provides the perfect sense, the definitive expression, the right definition of what it means to blend garage and psychedelia. Not that it was necessary, but this 'historical' document is essential to convey the greatness of this band.
The Ganjas: Ghost River
File Audio Not intrested ★
A compilation by the Chilean neo-psychedelic band The Ganjas released by the always brilliant label BYM Records. Let's just say they're not the most suggestible band of the bunch, and this compilation serves as a confirmation in that regard.
The Holydrug Couple: Moonlust
File Audio I have it ★★
The champions of neo-psychedelia made in Chile. Their latest album was released last May (2015) via BYM Records (of course) from the project by Ives Sepulveda. Fluid sounds and typically dreampop, it has nothing to envy to more prestigious and hyped names in the genre.

The Index: The Red Label Album
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Released practically just a few months after the first album (with Tom Belew added on bass guitar, whose contribution is definitely felt), the album is now dubbed 'The Red Label Album.' It sounds probably less experimental and garage-like compared to the first episode, taking on more of a blues psychedelia vibe ('Spoonful,' 'Eight Miles High') and leaning towards conventional song structure ('New York Mining Disaster,' 'Paradise Beach'). The album features a reimagining of 'Turquoise Feline' from the first album and two covers of Bee Gees songs ('I Can't See Nobody,' 'Break Out'). It’s a beautiful work nonetheless, with its only 'flaw' being that it isn’t something as unattainable as the previous one. I already love this band a lot.

The Index: The Black Label Album
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
The Index, a psychedelic band from Grosse Point, Michigan, had a brief life and released only two albums a few months apart, establishing themselves during that time on the Detroit scene. This album is generally referred to as 'The Black Label Album.' The record features two very personal covers, one by the Byrds ('Eight Miles High') and one by the Supremes ('You Keep Me Hangin' On'), but in practice, we are not dealing with a group that played in a conventional way for the time. The garage spirit and a marked penchant for noise, as well as experimentalism that might remind one of that crazy guy Michael Yonkers, make this record a small, raw splinter that went wild in the landscape of psychedelic music in the USA at the end of the sixties.

The only Index I have tried is in Novi Sad and it is the name of the city's official sandwich: the most filthy and corrupt I have ever eaten.

I'm looking for it @[Buzzin' Fly], thanks. @[Carlos], I'm always on board with the paninozzi even if I’ve never had the chance to try the one you mentioned. Unfortunately. The record collected there is highly recommended, and you can find a review of it made by master Buzzin anyway.
The J. Geils Band: The Morning After
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Second album by the J. Geils Band featuring guitarist J. Geils and vocalist Peter Wolf, who is becoming increasingly central to the group's dynamics and is practically the author of almost all the songs on the album. Released on Atlantic in 1971, it’s a mix of rhythm & blues sounds and the garage rock'n'roll acidity of Stones-MC5. A must for genre lovers.
The J. Geils Band: The J. Geils Band
File Audio I have it ★★★
Debut album of the J. Geils Band. The band's sound is beautifully raw and mostly oriented towards rhythm & blues vibes. Dominating it all is J. Geils' guitar ('Serves You Right To Suffer', 'First I Look At the Purse') and Richard 'Magic Dick' Salwitz's harmonica runs wild ('Sno-Cone').
The KVB: Of Desire
File Audio I have it ★★★★
It's their best album. The UK duo made up of Nicholas Wood and Kat Day finally reaches a mature dimension with this record. The sounds of their songs are less jagged than in the past. The electronic atmospheres and references to a certain dark wave remain, but the composition is overall less rigid, making the album and the band's sound more accessible to a wider audience. An upgrade that I believe is fundamentally due to experience, but who knows, perhaps a desire to try to be more easy-listening has also played a part, especially after their experiences at major and hyped festivals like Primavera. Mastered by Sonic Boom for its 'spatial' quality.

Second album by the band from Denver, Colorado. Epigones of the more famous Mumford & Sons, they reproduce that same American pop-folk sound of nice guys that I've never been able to appreciate.
The Mystery Lights: The Mystery Lights
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
First LP on Wick Records by this New York-based psych garage band released on June 24. It practically struck me at first listen because it's immediately easy-listening while also rightly electric and acidic. The sounds have an evident vintage taste, drawing from the garage music of the sixties, along with some rhythm and blues nuances that may follow. All characteristics that, more than pointing to the Strokes—given that both bands are from New York and Casablancas’ band was once considered an heir and witness to the great legacy of the city’s garage and suburban heritage—bring to mind bands like Night Beats, Mystic Braves, and the usual Ty Segall. An debut that can only be described as astonishing.
It would be enough to quote Anton Newcombe, 'I think it’s one of the best psychedelic blues records ever.' Debut album of the band released in 2010 and subject to various reissues over the years. A great psychedelic rock record with a vintage flavor, but not only that. Notable is the wonderful groove of the bass lines and some kraut influences ('Grio's Wisdom'), which is always a plus. Beautiful.

The Richmond Sluts: Sweet Somethin'
File Audio I have it ★★★★
7'' recorded at Toast Studios in San Francisco in 2002 by the garage band Richmond Sluts, released shortly after the release of their self-titled debut LP. It contains only two tracks, 'Sweet Somethin'' and 'Sad City.' Still, it’s a shot of rock'n'roll garage adrenaline.
The latest EP by The Strokes was released by the independent label founded and owned by Julian Casablancas (Cult Records). It features three unreleased tracks, 'Drag Queen', 'Oblivius', and 'Threat of Joy', as well as a remix of 'Oblivius' done by the band’s drummer, Fabrizio Moretti. This marks the return of one of the most acclaimed yet simultaneously criticized bands of the past fifteen years, and personally, despite appreciating their early work, I never expected much from them. The three tracks are, all in all, listenable, and the EP as a whole is pleasant, picking up sounds that align with what the band has offered in their recent works and that usual, typically 'ruffiano' aftertaste that these New Yorkers know how to serve up well.
Thomas Vinterberg: Kollektivet
File Video I lack ★★★★★
With 'Kollektivet', perhaps Thomas Vinterberg symbolically closes a circle that he opened with 'Festen' in 1998. The film tells the story of a couple (and their little girl) who decide to live in a 'commune' with other people, establishing a relationship of total openness in terms of collaboration at home and also on an emotional level. Before long, cracks will appear within this system, and the ideal tranquility is seriously challenged by the facts of life and the interactions among the various individuals. However, in the midst of these fissures, rays of sunlight break through, leading to a greater awareness in addressing individual and collective issues, overcoming that large yet small closed micro-system already partially uncovered by Vinterberg over the years with his cinema, which ultimately is the family.
A romantic drama centered around the beautiful and as independent as she is indecisive Carey Mulligan. Generally, I don’t like these 'romantic' films, referring both to the themes and the settings (the film is set in England in the second half of the nineteenth century), but in the end, I was swept away by the viewing just as if I were reading - indeed - a nineteenth-century novel by Thomas Hardy, the author from whose work the film is adapted. But Vinterberg, in the end, has certainly done much, much better and more interesting work.

If by chance you want to listen to it in advance, just give me a shout and I'll send it to you. Thanks for the compliments on the blog. In fact, I practically started writing again about a year ago with a friend who convinced me to collaborate on his blog. I was writing a ton, one or two reviews a day. Then, like with all the things I enjoy, I messed it all up and stopped collaborating. Last February, I opened this little blog where I write every now and then. I write in English because I haven't studied it, but I would like to reach, not perfection in the use of English, but at least as high a level as possible: that way I practice and at the same time I like to think that I can connect with as many people as possible. Even though blogs aren't really followed much anymore (I know from experience, I have others too). So I do everything on the fly, without overthinking it, since these are impressions and instant feelings. Anyway, I translate many, almost all, of them into Italian and post them on debasio, which I still consider a bit of my home.
Tommy Lee Jones: The Homesman
File Video I lack ★★
Film written, directed, produced, and starring Tommy Lee Jones. The film is set in the mid-1800s in the old west and in what once constituted the 'frontier.' It is from here that Mary Bee (Hilary Swank) takes on the heavy task of transporting three women suffering from severe disorders and mental illnesses across the frontier, to Iowa, practically to the east. During the journey, she will meet and be assisted by George Briggs, a drifter and deserter whom she herself saves from hanging. It is an atypical western, where on one side the differences between the frontier world and life in the east of the country are highlighted, and on the other, the stories of the main characters are intertwined with the hallucinations of the three 'traveling' sick women.
Trementina: Almost Reach The Sun
File Audio I have it ★
New, yet another band from the neo-psych wave coming from Chile. This is the first album by Trementina (soon on tour in Europe), a band that is more accurately defined as shoegaze and/or dreampop, with some outbursts here and there in true Yo La Tengo style. A nice little record, it will surely please fans of the genre.
