Trementina: Almost Reach The Sun
File Audio I have it ★
New, yet another band from the neo-psych wave coming from Chile. This is the first album by Trementina (soon on tour in Europe), a band that is more accurately defined as shoegaze and/or dreampop, with some outbursts here and there in true Yo La Tengo style. A nice little record, it will surely please fans of the genre.
Uberto Pasolini: Still Life
File Video I lack ★★★
This beautiful film by Italian director Uberto Pasolini tells the story of a lonely man who dies alone. John May (Eddie Marsan) works as a municipal clerk and is responsible for tracing the relatives of the deceased who have passed away in complete solitude. John leads an ordinary life devoid of notable emotions, and feeling somehow connected to these individuals who lost their lives without anyone by their side, he performs his work with the utmost commitment, trying to give it a broader meaning. This is not only a genuine research job and the final tribute to the deceased during the funeral, but also an ideal reconciliation, time after time, of friends and family with the departed person. The film received several well-deserved awards at the Venice Film Festival in 2013.
Ulu Grosbard: Straight Time
File Video I lack ★★★★
Inspired by a novel by Edward Bunker (who also has a small role in the film), 'Straight Time' tells the story of Max Dembo (Dustin Hoffman), who, released from prison and under supervised parole, struggles to reintegrate into society due to prejudice and the constant pressure exerted by his supervisor Earl Frank (a fantastic M. Emmet Walsh). He quickly finds himself in trouble again and begins to commit criminal acts once more. Directed by Ulu Grosbard, the film's beginning is probably its strongest part, while it somewhat loses momentum in the slower and more predictable second half. A symbol of a certain New Hollywood with great characters like Walsh himself and Harry Dean Stanton, Theresa Russell, and an ending that, however unspectacular, is perhaps a punch to the gut and at the same time the only possible one.
Ulysses: 010
File Audio I have it ★★★★
A side-project of Robert Schneider (lead vocalist of The Apples in Stereo), Ulysses released one album ('010') in 2004. The project was conceived by Schneider while he was touring Spain with Apples in Stereo. Out via Eenie Meerie, the songs contained in the album were initially going to be demos, but later the band was so satisfied with the performance that they decided to use them for the final release. This, along with the particular use of the monaural audio, gave the album a more lo-fi attitude that, mixed with the typical fury of Pavement's 'Slanted and Enchanted' and the sensitive taste of the bands part of the roster of Elephant 6 Rec., made this a unique episode and one of the best events in power-pop music of the last decade. Unavoidable.
Van Der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Composite album from one of the fundamental bands of the progressive genre Made in UK. The record features three tracks (and in the 2005 reissue also some more or less interesting bonus tracks). Long symphonic sessions where Peter Hammill's band showcases all their compositional skills and musical knowledge. Unfortunately, I couldn't appreciate it as much as it deserves. The best moments for me are in the second track, 'Men-Erg', at times acidic like the MC5 might sound, although here we are obviously talking about something quite different.

No worries. I realize that we’re talking about an album that is considered, and probably rightly so, a cornerstone of the progressive genre in particular. But you have to understand that my rating is clearly my personal opinion and that I have no didactic intent or aim to give lessons to anyone. Frankly, I can't feel any emotion listening to this album; it leaves me absolutely nothing. I could even talk about boredom. No provocation, of course.

In fact, I even feel sorry to give him a low score and judge him so negatively, especially since my dear friend Battlegods warmly recommended him to me. However, I had previously mentioned that I’ve never really connected with the genre, so I suppose he’ll understand. :)

Of course. Fortunately, everyone has their own tastes. After all, I have to say I don't have any prejudices; I listened to the whole album, bonus tracks included. It's true, I expected that I might not like it, given that I've always had little affinity with the genre, but why not give it a listen anyway? I must say that I truly can't find any appreciation for this type of music, even preferring some commercial music episodes. What can I say, that's life. I do like the Grateful Dead and Joy Division though. :)

I like Joy Division too, but only a few tracks from each album. I've been listening to Closer since 1985, but my favorite tracks are just Atrocity Exhibition, A Means to an End, and Isolation... the rest I've never really appreciated too much.

I'm not a fanatic of Joy Division, though, so I understand you, but I do like them. Maybe it's because I haven't listened to them since 1985, who knows.

@[hjhhjij] (damn, I hope I tagged you correctly) I understand your threat. I've already gotten an eyepatch for my left eye or alternatively my right, so I can always use just one eye and assist you in your unscrupulous killing intent. ;)

Let’s reveal one of the three killers of hjhh: one is me dressed as a duck :) I'm super happy you listened to this masterpiece, but I can’t believe that the schizo attack at the 2-minute mark of "Man Erg" doesn’t mean anything to you, or the universe of "A plague..". Just to say, I’m not a fan of the Grateful, I much prefer CSN&Y and Jefferson :)

Another killer could only be @[tonysoprano], obviously. What can I say, guys, it's not at all excluded that I might revisit this. I don't feel like it at the moment, frankly speaking, but never say never; fortunately, musical tastes are volatile and all things can change.

Man-Erg is actually the episode that convinced me the most, as I said. I like CSN&Y, although I prefer Neil with the Crazy Horse. The Jeffersons don't drive me crazy, but they're okay for me.

I simply let myself be deceived by the acidity of some passages, but as mentioned, we are talking about two radically different things. In fact, it's no coincidence that I like the MC5, and quite a lot.
Velvet Morning: Gorilla
File Audio I have it ★★★
Debut album from this very young band made in the UK, released last June on Exag' Records. An album of psychedelic music that, rather than relying on acid sounds, offers Slowdive-like suggestions and evocative atmospheres. The sounds could be likened to those of other established bands from the neo-psychedelic movement such as Stevenson Ranch Davidians or Quarter After, and Asteroid #4. The album title, 'Gorilla', might be misleading and suggest some aggressive sounds and clattering noise. Nothing of the sort: after all, even these big creatures have a heart and feelings. Here they are.
Verma: Mul.Apin
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Fourth studio album released via Trouble in Mind Records in November 2015 by the acid-psych band from Chicago, Verma. This album is sure to please enthusiasts of the psychedelic genre, especially those who love the spatial openings typical of kraut-rock and space music. Only five tracks on this record, but the last one, the long sixteen-minute session of 'Gal Damhara/Last Battle,' is worth the so-called price of admission on its own. It's an album that didn’t get much play last year and that I highly recommend: I definitely consider it among the must-listens for 2015 (and for anyone who may not have heard it back then, of course).
War: Why Can't We Be Friends?
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Il settimo album in studio della band funk americana di Long Beach, California. Mescolando diversi generi ed elementi di rock, funk, jazz, latino e rhythm and blues, 'Why Can't We Be Friends?'

Oh well... not their best (after all, how could they top "The World is a Ghetto"?) but... what a great, varied, ecumenical band the War were.
Ultra-awarded (Oscar for Best Production Design) romantic comedy written, directed (jointly with Buck Henry), and starred by Warren Beatty. I believe that among other things, it is a remake, but after all, this idea has been revisited several times in the cinema world. The plot: Joe Pendleton, an American football champion, finds himself in heaven before his time due to a 'mistake' by what would be his guardian angel. Because of this mix-up, he is given the chance to return to life, but he must do so in a body different from his, which, in the meantime, has been cremated. A brilliant comedy that was a huge success at the time and perhaps still works today despite the passing years and a style that is definitely very much from the seventies.
Waxahatchee: Early Recordings
File Audio I have it ★★★
'Cerulean Salt' (Wichita, 2013) I liked a lot, to the point that I considered it one of the best albums released that year, and in the same way, I found the subsequent and critically acclaimed 'Ivy Tripp,' released last year, to be irrelevant, mundane, even superfluous. This EP, on the other hand, forcibly reconciles me with Waxahatchee (aka Katie Crutchfield) and her more indie and lo-fi nature, which is what I have always appreciated about her. It couldn't be otherwise, after all, since 'Early Recordings' (Merge Records) is nothing more than a collection of a handful of songs (five) written in 2011 and until now only released on cassette. Beautiful as a breath of fresh air.
Wayne Wang: The Center of the World
File Video I lack ★★★★★
Masterpiece film by Wayne Wang (already the director of the double masterpiece 'Smoke' + 'Blue In the Face'). There is a man and a woman who cannot love each other. In physical contact, something is always missing, and the emotional connection is altered and hindered by the fact that evidently neither of them believes in the possibility of love anymore. The scenes, not just those of eros, and the settings, the colors—all of it is fantastic and in some way psychedelic. We are in Las Vegas, but the film could be set anywhere. We could be anywhere and nowhere at the same time. Like the two characters in the film.
In the end, as Herzog emphasized after a heated dispute with Abel Ferrara, this film is not a remake of the 1992 film starring Harvey Keitel. Thank goodness, I say, because otherwise the comparison for poor Herzog would have been ruthless. The plot is filled with twists and turns that unravel in the finale with incredible ease, almost magically. It’s a weak film, crammed with rhetoric, where the only redeeming quality is the great effort (at least that) that Nicholas Cage puts into playing the bad lieutenant. Not to mention the beauty of Eva Mendes. Other talented actors and character actors like Michael Shannon (first and foremost), Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, and even Xzibit are also wasted. The best part is the setting in a New Orleans that is desperately trying to recover after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
William Friedkin: Cruising
File Video I lack ★★★★★
A scandalous masterpiece by William Friedkin, which sparked much controversy at the time and would do the same today. Al Pacino, a New York City police officer, goes undercover in the city's gay club scene in pursuit of a murderer. One of his best performances in my opinion, though perhaps one of the least celebrated, due to a certain 'censorship' that still prevails over this film, to which the director was forced to make several cuts of scenes deemed scandalous and extreme.
Wim Wenders: Every Thing Will Be Fine
File Video I lack ★★★★
One of the best films released in 2015. It's inevitable to think of 'Reservation Road' by Terry George, from which this film partially draws its themes. James Franco is skilled and versatile in portraying different parts and does well here too, where perhaps the development of the plot may not please everyone. At the heart of it, there is not so much guilt or a thirst for revenge or anger; what prevails is always the desire to find balance. In this sense, it is a drama with a happy ending after all.
Woodkid: Desierto OST
File Audio I lack ★★
Yoann Lemoine is definitely one of the most 'hype' names of the moment. I wasn't displeased with 'The Golden Age', but this time it's a soundtrack for a film, 'Desierto', directed by Jonas Cuaron (son of Alfonso Cuaron, ('Gravity', 'Children of Men')) on the theme of immigration. The sounds seem suitable for the film's atmosphere and made me think of the first album, the self-titled one, by Calla, the band from Brooklyn, New York, which had its moment of glory last decade.
Woody Allen: Midnight In Paris
File Video Not intrested ★
A movie that, on one hand, seeks to be an invitation to not abandon your dreams and to try to realize them now, in the present, and on the other hand, aims to pay homage to a special era. Paris during the 1920s was a reference point and a place where many artists created an exceptional moment in culture that remains relevant today in figurative arts and literature. Gil Pender (Owen Wilson), who is truly fascinated by this world and wants to become a writer, starts traveling back in time where he meets all his idols (Hemingway and Dali, Bunuel and Scott Fitzgerald...). A journey through time that helps him to understand his life. A low fantasy romantic comedy in a style that Woody Allen has applied to his recent films, generally appreciated by critics and the public, but that, to tell the truth, feels redundant and never as deep as it pretends to be.
Wussy: Forever Sounds
File Audio Not intrested ★
If it had come out in the nineties, an album like this could probably have tried to climb the charts, presenting themselves as the alternative band of the moment. The sound of this band, which is their trademark, is typically nineties, after all. This doesn't exclude the possibility that they could have a following and fans today. Certainly, I am not among them.
Xavier Beauvois: Le rancon de la gloire
File Video Not intrested ★
The film is a comedy set in Switzerland in the 1970s. It tells the story of two friends who, in financial trouble, decide to steal the corpse of Charlie Chaplin to demand a ransom from his family. In truth, the story is essentially a pretext to pay homage to the great Charlot, who is referred to by the two protagonists as a 'friend' and protector of immigrants, vagabonds, and the downtrodden.

@[G] in this case, however, the tags didn't work. Is it possible that it's because I added them later and with a modification? Now I'll try with a new definition.
Instrumental album by Jon Attwood. The project is all in the title: we need photographs. When the memory of everything that has happened—from our personal experiences to the horrors of the world wars, the death of Kennedy, the man on the Moon, and the events of September 11—these memories will fade away with our death, and the same will happen with the eventual demise of digital media. Keep taking and developing photographs: that’s the message. The album will surely appeal to fans of ambient music. I find it beautiful, but frankly, it’s endless. It’s suited for marathoners.
Yeti: Amidst
File Audio Not intrested ★
'Amidst' is the latest release from this French band that plays music straddling the line between typically dreampop influences ('Phos', 'Buildings') and others that evoke certain alternative sounds reminiscent of Radiohead, both for the variety of sounds offered ('Farewell') and for a certain sensitivity, along with those vocal styles that make it seem as though ghosts are swirling around you ('The Scene'). Overall, this album could be more interesting than it appears to me, but it didn’t particularly impress me and after the first listen, it began to bore me terribly.
Yeti Lane: L'aurore
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Last album via Clapping Music from the Parisian heavy-psych duo that Damo Suzuki and Anton Newcombe love. A crescendo of psych acidity that concludes in the cosmic explosions of 'Exquis' and 'Ne Dis Rien'. A definitive consecration.
