35007: Sea of Tranquillity Ep
File Audio I have it ★★★
The 35007 hit the mark once again with this EP released in 2001, aptly titled 'Sea of Tranquillity.' It goes from 'Von Braun' to 'Artificial Intelligente' to the title track in a trip of stoner psychedelic music that makes you feel as if you're inside a kind of space cocktail shaker tossed adrift in a rain of asteroids and meteors. Fasten your seatbelts, Chewbe, ready for the jump into hyperspace!
  • Artificial Intelligence is perhaps their best "space" track. It might be on par with the best piece from Phase V, if only you could tell one piece of Phase V from another...

Hehe, not that it's necessary after all, I would say. :) I miss 'Phase V' though, damn, I only discovered 35007 very, very recently thanks to ziltoid. It's on my listening list.
  • Apart from the albums, on Soulseek you can find two live recordings from Roadburn, each better than the other. The first features tracks from the first two albums, while the second includes stuff from Liquid as well. I haven't been searching in many, many years (damn how time flies, at least 10...), so it's likely that now you can find material that includes Phase V; they did a couple of Roadburns.

I'll look for them after listening to 'Phase V' at this point, curious to hear at least on record how the live performance translates, since I've never seen them perform live.
35007: Liquid
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Third LP of the Dutch space rock band 35007 (aka 'Loose' in beghilos or calculator spelling). Released in 2002, the album is a long session of space rock and dronic music that, instead of being somehow impetuous (despite the typically stoner sound elements), slowly but increasingly penetrates the listeners' ears until it transports them to a spatial and ethereal dimension. As a dear friend says, ''Liquid' - that's the title of the album - 'sounds incredible, it strips you down and puts you in a spacesuit, it does everything by itself.' It's also good for the laziest cosmonauts then. Those couch ones. Try it to believe.

Aa.Vv.: Blonde on Blonde Revisited
File Audio I have it ★★
50 years since the album's inception, MOJO magazine proudly presents Bob Dylan's classic 'Blonde on Blonde' revisited and covered by fourteen different artists. Out for free with MOJO July 2016, the album contains artists of different genres covering Dylan's famous songs in their own style. I must admit that I found none of these covers so much exciting, but in the complex, this is a good homage to the actually best songwriter ever and to one of his most famous albums. Going from the garage sound of 'Obviously 5 Believers' by Night Beats to a dreamy melodic version of 'I Want You' by Phosphorescent to a struggling version of 'Sad Eyed Of The Lowlands', the best episodes are probably Steve Gunn's 'Visions Of Johanna' and Michael Chapman's 'Leopard-skin Pill-box Hat'. Definitely not a masterpiece, but for this, well, listen directly to the original one.
Abel Ferrara: King of New York
File Video Not intrested ★
A polished gangster movie directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Christopher Walken as the lead. Recently released from prison, drug lord Frank White wants to somehow clean up his 'curriculum' by getting back into business and at the same time (with the money earned from drug dealing) contributing to a major funding for a hospital in Harlem, his neighborhood. Old and new enemies, competitors, the police, will throw obstacles in his way. A film with deliberately dark tones, characteristic of the director's style, I honestly find it boring and unremarkable, unless you are truly a huge fan of the genre (I am not).
  • that the genre and the movie might not be to their liking, but glossy, definitely not.

Commenting on the film immediately after watching it, I felt I had to be quite critical. I had never seen it before and, to be honest, the plot didn't really intrigue me much. I didn't like the film at all; I honestly find it very bad, which is a shame because Abel Ferrara is a great director in my eyes, and the cast at his disposal isn't bad. I like how the scenes are shot. But the dialogues, the plot, and the characters are really poor (in my opinion, of course).
Adam Salky: I Smile Back
File Video I lack ★★★
Great performance by Sarah Silverman, the famous American comedic actress, who here excels for the first time in a dramatic role (I suggest reading her interviews regarding her acting, which demonstrate a particular sensitivity). The film tells the story of a woman who leads a life like everyone else's, seemingly, but is actually deeply suffering from depression and, amidst drug and medication abuse, never manages to find balance for herself and her family life. There is no real ending to the story. As it should be. A film that seems to tell an extreme story, but instead conveys what is an ordinariness buried under shame and misplaced guilt.
Afterhours: Folfiri o Folfox
File Audio I have it ★★★
The album is apparently heavily influenced in its content (from the lyrics and atmospheres) by the death of Manuel Agnelli's father. In this work, I find one of the usual flaws of the Afterhours, which is to always have too much going on. If it had been composed of just ten songs, we would probably be talking about a great album right now. Instead, alongside some very beautiful songs ('Non voglio ritrovare il tuo nome', 'Lasciati ingannare', 'Né pani né pesci'), we find some objectively bad tracks (like 'Fra i non viventi vivremo noi', for example) or in some way incomprehensible for how poorly they came out, if not at all ('San Miguel', the same title track...). My favorite? 'Se io fossi il giudice'. Beautiful halfway.
Alan Arkin: Little Murders
File Video I lack ★★★★★
Taken from a play presented by Jules Feiffer in New York in 1967, the film (directed by Alan Arkin) is set in a violent and degenerated society. At the center of the story is Alfred Chamberlain (Elliott Gould), a young, disillusioned photographer who is unable to feel any kind of emotion and lets everything that happens to him wash over him. Nevertheless, he begins to date and eventually marries the tenacious and upbeat Patsy (Marcia Rodd). Starting a arduous process to try to change his life, her murder will irrevocably shake his existence. The ending is practically a crescendo of delusions and brilliant reflections on what society was like back then and what it is today. The performances of Vincent Gardenia stand out, along with the brief appearances of Donald Sutherland and Alan Arkin himself as a police inspector.
Alberto Fortis: Tra Demonio E Santità
File Audio I have it ★★★
Second album by Alberto Fortis after the eponymous one released the year before, where the strengths were two catchy yet provocative tracks like 'Milano e Vincenzo' and 'A voi romani,' which remains perhaps his most famous work. However, this album, 'Demonio e santità' (1980), appears overall much more interesting than its predecessor in terms of lyrics and themes addressed. Fortis himself, regardless of the content, seems more mature and in command of the 'scene,' delivering more convincing vocal performances that manage to convey to the listener the clash between good and evil that constitutes the main concept of the album.
Based on a novel by Jesse Andrews, who also wrote the screenplay, and acclaimed by both audiences and critics at the Sundance Film Festival 2015, the film is undeniably a small masterpiece by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. The content is certainly dramatic; the story revolves around the friendship between a troubled boy, mostly unable to form social relationships, and a girl suffering from leukemia. It is well-told and never tries to be overly tear-jerking, but rather attempts to convey - within the limits of possibility - positive messages. Initially approached with some skepticism, I found myself pleasantly surprised and appreciated it greatly.
Algiers: Algiers
File Audio I have it ★★
Self-titled debut album of the band from Atlanta, Georgia, released via Matador Records. Received very positively by both music lovers and critics, I listened to it belatedly, a year after its release, without knowing exactly what to expect. In practice, I would say it is a kind of experimental neo-soul. The sounds are dark and nod to gospel while paying homage to a certain post-punk tradition, even if it lacks the violence and sexy drive that bands like Gun Club or Birthday Party might have had. I like the idea, but the result is not exceptional. Nevertheless, it remains an interesting album that, being easy to listen to, can work well for any type of listener.

Angel Olsen: My Woman
File Audio I have it ★★★★
I appreciate Angel Olsen. She's a good singer and songwriter and she has that typical sexy and provocative attitude that really figures it out, mixed with a particular sensibility that you could easily deduce from her songs. The new album, 'My Woman', is a sort of concept album about who the women are in modern society and about Angel Olsen herself. Songs like 'Never Be Mine', 'Not Gonna Kill You', 'Heart Shaped Face' have the right pop attitudes to be masterpieces in radio rotation, while 'Sister' and 'Woman' are two sensitive electro and experimental portraits of women that a man could possibly recognize himself in as well. These songs consecrate her as one of the best contemporary female songwriters. Angel Olsen, you’re my woman definitely. Really happy that nowadays there are still albums so pure and concrete at the same time like this.

Aziza Brahim: Abbar el Hamada
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Born and raised in a Sahrawi refugee camp in the Algerian desert, Aziza Brahim is more than just a musician; she is also a poet and a human rights activist for the Sahrawi cause. This is her second album on Glitterbeat Records and a small masterpiece in the genre, where Aziza combines her sensitivity and poetic touch with the characteristic fury of the desert typical of Tinariwen.
Ba Cissoko: Djeli
File Audio Not intrested ★
Latest album from Guinean Ba Cissoko and his band boasts a sound that is quite typical and characteristic, to the point of being described as that type of sound where Africa meets Jimi Hendrix. This is particularly true for their use of the kora, a traditional lute from West Africa, which they utilize extensively. Overall, it’s an interesting and highly listenable album; some tracks even possess what I might call an irresistible groove ('C'est pas facile'), but after a couple of listens, everything felt monochord to me and the magic faded away. Perhaps it’s too 'technical' for my tastes, where ethnic becomes, in some way, something closed that goes around in circles.
Band Of Horses: Why Are You OK
File Audio I have it ★★
They are undoubtedly one of the most celebrated and loved bands in the indie scene right now (a label that might even feel too tight for them, as it's more about attitude than a real status). Personally, I’ve never considered them much, and I listened to the album without any great expectations. Well, in that sense, I couldn’t help but appreciate it. Why not? What I mean is that you must really not like them to say that an album like this isn’t at least listenable. If you’re looking for a masterpiece, just move on to something else. Clear enough?
Ben Lewin: The Sessions
File Video Not intrested ★
The film tells the story of the life (a snippet of life) of the poet Mark O'Brien. Afflicted by polio since the age of six and nearly completely paralyzed, forced to live for much of the time within an 'iron lung,' Mark, at 38, decides to seek contact with a woman, to try to establish a connection with a woman or at least to attempt to have a sexual relationship. The film clearly has positive content and intentions, even commendable, regarding self-love and love for others, the love of life, but it did not resonate with me.
Beverley Knight: Soulsville
File Audio I have it ★★★
I didn't know this English vocalist of Jamaican descent and I stumbled upon her latest album purely by chance. Well, what can I say, in the end, even though it's definitely a pop album and could be classified within a certain 'mainstream' circuit that I'm not used to frequenting as a listener, I found it very, very listenable and I liked it a lot, so much so that I ended up listening to it repeatedly. The collaborations with Jamie Cullum, Jools Holland, and Sam Moore stand out, but above all – of course – her voice, which is simply fantastic. A pleasant surprise as far as I'm concerned.
Big Audio Dynamite: This Is Big Audio Dynamite
File Audio I have it ★★★★
The first successful album from the band founded by former Clash Mick Jones and Don Letts. A mix of different genres from rock and roll to reggae and funk, culminating in hip-hop, the album is in some ways the true natural evolution of what the Clash's sound was (that is, 'Combat Rock'). If we have to find a flaw, the album does not maintain the same strength from beginning to end and undergoes a kind of gradual decline in intensity that I still notice even after years of listening. It remains a fundamental album for the era.

the album, even after years of listening, remains a masterpiece. Medicine Show, Sony, and E = Mc squared are an initial frontal assault that has few equals.

I completely agree. What I wanted to say, in fact (I hope I explained myself well), is that even listening to it again today after so many years, I still find the beginning to have an incredible power that isn't maintained throughout the entire album. That’s understandable, of course. Indeed, it's fine, there's nothing to say; that trio you mentioned is simply amazing.

You explained yourself very well. In this sense, the subsequent "No 10 Upping Street" has an overall compactness that is perhaps superior. But a debut triptych like that, only in dreams...
Big Mountain County: Anachronicle
File Audio Not intrested ★
Recorded live at the end of 2015 at Locanda Atlantide (Rome) and released by Area Pirata Rec, the latest album by the Italians Big Mountain County is a reimagining of the psychedelic garage sounds of the sixties. However, the band doesn't shy away from veering off the main path as if seeking inspiration in other genres like punk and grunge, deviations that ultimately weigh on the final product and on my personal appreciation.
Released via Glitterbeat, one of the most unique and interesting albums of early 2016. 'The Copan Connection' is the meeting of Bixiga 70, a band that plays funk and dance music from South America, and dubmaster Victor Rice, a New Yorker transplanted in São Paulo, Brazil. Recorded in Victor Rice's own studio, the album is a mix of dub music and beats, the ideal kaleidoscopic soundtrack for what is one of the biggest metropolises in the world, namely the city of São Paulo, where 'Copan' is indeed a modern architectural complex. An eye focused on the present rather than the past or the future.
Black Market Karma: Semper Fi
File Audio I have it ★★★★
A record by the UK band that I consider the quintessential neo-psychedelic band of the new generation. Released, as usual, on Flower Power Records, like the other works of the band, it stands out for that approach to the psychedelic genre which is somehow 'easy listening' (not accidentally the title of one of their semi-clandestine LPs) while at the same time being evocative and dreamy. The average length of the songs exceeds five minutes: which means it's a record that is great for taking some trips. Frankly, I don't see how it couldn't be enjoyed.
It’s a transitional album after the brilliant debut that practically amazed everyone and before 'Howl', which is arguably the band’s best album. It took me a while to love it as it deserves, but in the end, it undeniably has that same power as 'BRMC'. There are a lot of beautiful songs, among them, 'US Government' and the monumental 'Heart and Soul' that closes the album.

I suggest giving them another chance, especially if you liked their debut, maybe starting again with 'Howl', which as you will hear, also picks up the typical mood and style of the band but expands the range of solutions quite a bit. As for the rest, there's no doubt they might be somewhat repetitive, although I really like them; they might be among my absolute favorite bands. Perhaps a bit of a disappointment live: a lot of show, but the sound wasn't the best. Worth watching again, maybe.

Bob Dylan: Melancholy Mood
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Bob Dylan sings Sinatra again in this EP that precedes the release of his upcoming album. Four songs delivered with his characteristic voice of a seasoned rockstar. I'm clearly biased, but I don't see how one could give this EP and the beauty of these songs a negative evaluation, and at this point, all I really care about is the release of the next album.
Bob Dylan: Desire
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Just the song that opens the album, 'Hurricane', would be enough to define the entire record as a masterpiece. And yet no, because the rest is a succession of fantastic insights from what is, after all, the greatest songwriter of all time. For what would be an unconventional review, I always suggest the one written at the time by Lester Bangs, worthy of his skirmishes with dear old Lou Reed.

Bob Dylan: Fallen Angels
File Audio I have it ★★★★
After 'Shadows In the Night' (2015), Bob Dylan once again sings Frank Sinatra in his new and latest album titled 'Fallen Angels'. The thirty-seventh studio album and an ideal follow-up to the previous record, it features twelve songs written by various authors (Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn...) and all of these, except for 'Skylark', have previously been interpreted by Sinatra. Clearly, in this case, as usual, much of the criticism (in addition to the fact that it is a cover album) is directed at his voice and interpretive abilities, which over the years have only gained more expressiveness. And then, in these specific cases here, it is well known that he loves to adopt this lovesick tomcat voice. It’s one of the typical vices he has always succumbed to throughout his career.
Bob Dylan: Shadows In the Night
File Audio I have it ★★★★
Dylan sings Frank Sinatra part one. An admiration from the songwriter of Duluth that, as he himself will say at the time of the album's release, comes from afar. 'When you start doing these songs, Frank's got to be on your mind. Because he is the mountain. That’s the mountain you have to climb, even if you only get part of the way there. And it’s hard to find a song he did not do. People talk about Frank all the time. He had this ability to get inside of the song in a sort of a conversational way. Frank sang to you—not at you. I never wanted to be a singer that sings at somebody. I’ve always wanted to sing to somebody. Certainly nobody worshipped Sinatra in the '60s like they did in the '40s. But he never went away—all those other things that we thought were here to stay, they did go away. But he never did.'
The second film directed by the Farrelly brothers after the successful 'Dumb and Dumber'. The story revolves around a young bowling player (Woody Harrelson) who, due to his main rival played by Bill Murray, loses his right hand. Years later, with a hook and a rubber hand in place of his own, he finds himself leading a dull and lonely existence. It’s only through meeting the young Amish Ismael, whom he considers a very promising bowler and decides to help, that he regains the desire to try again. A charming comedy featuring a couple of great actors that is always a pleasure to watch. A film for which it is impossible to ask for more.
Brett Ratner: Tower Heist
File Video Not intrested ★
In the beginning there was 'The Usual Suspects'... Then followed a whole series of films over the years in which a ragtag band of 'crooks', or so they seem, attempts fanciful heists, along with a succession of more or less comical scenes. Here, in this comedy by Brett Ratner, we have the odd couple made up of Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller leading a group of improvised robbers in an attempt to steal from their former employer, a Wall Street businessman who financially cheated and then fired them. Amusing but nothing more. Sadly noted for being the very first Italian film in which Eddie Murphy is not dubbed by the historic and dearly missed Tonino Accolla.
