not bad, huh? It's just that it's too Metallica cover 1991. Definitely better than the next one, "The Stige," if I'm not mistaken.
Black Sabbath: Heaven And Hell

Blaze Bayley: Promise And Terror
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
The most emotionally charged album by Blaze. After the loss of his wife, what emerges is a destroyed, discouraged man, yet unfazed by it, he carries on. The sounds are reminiscent of Blood & Belief from 2004, as well as the same state of mind that can be felt while listening, but it results in more mature songwriting and sometimes lengthy songs that reveal facets of Bayley that had not yet surfaced. God Of Speed, Faceless, 1633, and City Of Bones are, in the opinion of the writer, the best.
dark angel: we have arrived
CD Audio I have it ★★★
A good debut album, but the best will come with the following records, which will also feature Gene Hoglan on drums instead of Jack Swartz, who played on this album. Nevertheless, tracks like Merciless Death, No Tomorrow, Vendetta, or the monolithic Welcome To The Slaughterhouse are great songs, made even more powerful by Don Doty's voice.
Dokken: Back For The Attack
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
In my opinion, the best album from Dokken's golden era. A total of 13 tracks that never get tiring, but rather amaze more and more with each listen. Just a hair below Under Lock And Key, released two years earlier, what makes it the most complete album is the perfect production, a phenomenal guitar performance by Lynch, and timeless songs like Kiss Of Death, Dream Warriors, Heaven Sent, So Many Tears, or even Mr. Scary. 10/10.

Therefore. The dame is a game played on the chessboard. The pieces that reach the opposite end are said to "go to dame," transforming into ruthless weapons. For the game, of course.

Definitely clearer! (or black?) Forgive the confusion ahahaha..
  • Mmm... I don't see anything outstanding here compared to their production. In my opinion, the absolute peak in their discography (thematic consistency, Don's voice finally not harmfully forced, great guitar work) coincides with "Up from the Ashes," which is then labeled as a solo album just because Linch had left. His replacement, the Swedish John Norum, is less peculiar than the American, but damn, he's perfect!
The least successful album by the Swedish band, worn-out pieces that draw from the two previous releases, neither of which were anything exceptional (but still more than sufficient). Reading the lyrics of "Life Is Now" or listening to "Between Two Worlds" or the lackluster instrumental "Something For The Ages" makes me cringe. It will only be with "Infected," three years later, that Hammerfall will manage to refresh their sound and return to a quality level that is more than good.
Hammerfall: Glory to the brave
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
You can say what you want about Hammerfall, especially regarding their recent works, but Glory To The Brave represented, during the years it was released, the rebirth of a genre that was already considered dead, along with albums like Nightfall In Middle Earth by Blind Guardian and Visions by Stratovarius. The immortal Stone Cold and Unchained stand as proof, along with the fantastic rhythmic work of Steel Meets Steel or Hammerfall, and the long and poignant title track. An eternal thank you to Oscar Dronjak.
King Diamond: Them
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of my all-time favorite albums, an undisputed masterpiece.
King Diamond: Fatal Portrait
CD Audio I lack ★★★★
Rehearsals for the masterpieces that would follow until 1990. The story divided into four parts is engaging both musically and lyrically, while the other songs, except for "Halloween," hark back significantly to the previous albums with Mercyful Fate. A great start.
Kreator: Phantom Antichrist
CD Audio I have it ★
One of the most shameless, idea-less, and terribly melodic records I've had the (dis)pleasure of listening to.
Manilla Road: Out of the Abyss
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The Manilla Road attempt to shift towards more Thrash Metal sounds, and listening to it almost 30 years later, the result is more than excellent. The sulfurous atmospheres of tracks like Helicon, the methodical and precise riffing of Slaughterhouse or the title track, and the references to the typical sound of the Road in War In Heaven or the lengthy Whitechapel, make this album the hardest musically from the Wichita group. Mark Shelton had various vocal issues after the recording of Out Of The Abyss, also due to the way he sang on the album, but the magic of bands like Manilla Road has not yet faded today, and we hope it never does.

Manilla Road: Open The Gates
CD Audio I lack ★★★★★
The second of four masterpieces from the Epic that will unfold over 5 years, Open The Gates proves to be heavier than its predecessor, yet it does not forsake the true essence of Manilla Road, which shines through in dreamy pieces like The Ninth Wave and Astronomica, as well as in more direct, true-to-form anthems (Metalström, Road Of Kings), and others still structured in a way that leaves you in awe (The Fires Of Mars, Hour Of The Dragon). The production, while not the best—some might even say this is a trademark of the band—greatly enhances Mark Shelton's voice, more furious and gritty compared to Crystal Logic. A must-have for genre lovers, without a doubt.
Manowar: Gods of War
CD Audio I have it ★★★
An album with great ideas, but surrounded by totally unnecessary orchestral arrangements and choirs randomly placed in some parts. However, it is counterbalanced by an exceptional vocal performance from Adams and good production for those years. It would have been interesting to hear the successor of the saga that saw Gods Of War as the first episode, and instead..

I really like it, even though I agree that there are too many intros and unnecessary parts. At least with this album, they tried to get closer to the Wagnerian perspective, and that’s at least a merit compared to the tackiness displayed in the previous records...
Megadeth: So Far, So Good... So What!
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Ready to receive criticism, but for me, the best album by Megadeth. Hook In The Mouth, Mary Jane, and Set The World Afire are enough to give it top marks.
  • Uhm... but you don't mention the best one ("Into My Darkest Hour")?

@[Radioactive Toy], all the songs are a 10 for me, including In my Darkest Hour, but I listed those because they were the tracks that struck me right away and I've become attached to them. @perfect element, if I compare them, we're really talking about micropiscial differences, one 98 and the other 100.

Twisted and not very catchy, even though it’s full of tension and atmosphere. No classic, not even the mentioned "In my Darkest Hour" has that stature; better the preceding and following tracks, pointless cover of "Anarchy in the UK."
    Anyway, to each their own...
One of the ugliest albums, to say the least, I've ever listened to in my life.
Overkill: Horrorscope
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the best Thrash albums of the '90s.
Overkill: Ironbound
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
After a not-so-bright period for Blitz and company (2000-2009), Ironbound finally brings inspiration and freshness back to Overkill. The title track, Killing For Living, Endless War, and Bring Me The Night stand as testament that Overkill has been reborn, and the subsequent albums will only serve as further confirmation.
Queensrÿche: Empire
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the best albums I've had the pleasure of listening to. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of some tracks; listen to it and listen to it again, it might surprise you. Operation: Mindcrime is obviously another story, but it still remains at extremely high levels.

I really like Hear In The Now Frontier as well, aside from two or three filler tracks, at the time it wasn't fully understood in my opinion.
Riot: Restless Breed
CD Audio I lack ★★★★
Rhett Forrester takes over the vocals, and the change is definitely noticeable, both vocally and musically. The Riot gradually lose that Blues/Hard Rock attitude that characterized the first three works, and we hear more refined riffs that are simple but never trivial, while Forrester's more "masculine" tone adds a more mature aspect to Reale's group. Notable songs include C.I.A., the title track, Loanshark, and Showdown.
Running Wild: The Rivalry
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
In my opinion, the last great album by Running Wild. The second part of a trilogy focused on good and evil, The Rivalry is a well-executed record played to perfection, although there are a couple of fillers (Kiss Of Death, Firebreather, Agents Of Black), as well as the last album with Jorg Michael on drums, who will be replaced in the subsequent albums by an electric drum.... sorry, the famous drummer Angelo Sasso. This does not diminish the absolute value of songs like Ballad Of William Kidd, War & Peace, Man On The Moon, and the title track. If Rock N' Rolf had stopped here with Running Wild, it would have been the best thing.
Running Wild: Masquerade
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Considered by critics as the beginning of the musical and compositional decline for Running Wild, Masquerade is far from what a distracted reader (and listener) would expect, being anything but a failure. Probably one of the heaviest albums from the German pirates, with the title track and Jorg Michael not holding back on the drums, or the beautiful refrain of Lions Of The Sea, and the riffs of Soleil Royal/Underworld leaving no moment to catch one's breath. The first act of a trilogy centered on good and evil, successful more than well in my opinion, 8.
Running Wild: Shadowmaker
CD Audio I have it ★
As a huge fan of Running Wild, it pains me to describe this album with just one word: rubbish. Only for the strong of heart.
Running Wild: Black Hand Inn
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Rock 'N Rolf returns two years after Pile of Skulls, delivering another masterpiece. Black Hand Inn is the culmination of all the characteristics of Running Wild: blazing fast riffs, never a moment of pause, and a unique atmosphere. Just listen to tracks like The Phantom Of Black Hand Inn, The Privateer, the relentless Titletrack, or Dragonmen. A special mention goes to Genesis, probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written by Kasparek, which, in its entire 15 minutes of duration, never gets tiresome. A round of applause is also deserved for Jorg Michael, who delivers a phenomenal performance on drums. 10.

Stratovarius: Stratovarius
CD Audio Not intrested ★
The testimony, if there was still a need for it, of the musical and personal decline that had affected Tolkki. Flunked across the board.
Stratovarius: Destiny
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the best Power albums from the late 90s. Personally, I prefer it even to Visions.
Stratovarius: Infinite
CD Audio I have it ★★★
The last great album by Stratovarius with Tolkki in the lineup. After the tour for the album, Tolkki's health and mental issues came increasingly to light, releasing the two decent Elements in 2003, and then the horrible self-titled one in 2005. Nonetheless, Infinite is a more than enjoyable album, with great tracks like Hunting High And Low, Mother Gaia, Glory Of The World, or the Titletrack, all supported by an excellent production. Of course, maintaining the standards of Episode, Visions, and Destiny was practically impossible, but still, it's a more than successful record. 3.5.
After the interlude of Life Among The Ruins, Defeis focuses all his energy on a trilogy between man and divinity, considered by many to be the creative peak of the band. The first part of The Marriage impresses mainly with its compact sound, evident in I Will Come For You, Blood Of The Saints, The Last Supper, but also for the elegance and search for melodies in House Of Dust, Self Crucifixion, and Forever Will I Roam. A Pursino more inspired than ever, and Defeis reaches with his voice emotional and vocal peaks that few will be able to match in the genre.

Life Among The Ruins, although unfamiliar, yet not so much, to their sounds, is a very pleasant album to listen to. Age Of Consent is one of their most underrated, and personally, I believe it's better than Noble Savage.
Virgin Steele: Life Among The Ruins
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
After a period marked by the failure of the record label following the release of Age Of Consent in '88, many considered Virgin Steele to be dead and buried. In '93, Defeis and Pursino returned with an album that diverged from their usual sound, focusing more on AOR, while astonishingly maintaining the sophistication and class that have always distinguished this band. Among the standout tracks are Sex Religion Machine, the energetic I Dress In Black (Woman With No Shadow), Too Hot To Handle, and Jet Black. It may be different from their other work, but not too much.
Virgin Steele: Noble Savage
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Jack Starr is kicked out of the band, and Defeis can finally express his passion for "barbaro-romantic" music. Personally, I still consider him somewhat immature, with a few songs that are too simplistic (Rock Me, I'm On Fire, Fight Tooth And Nail), but the rest of the album is simply magnificent. A great prelude to the albums that will follow, but above all to the masterpieces of the '90s.

Great transition album. A must-listen for the amazing albums of the nineties, especially Invictus. More refined and less violent than Manowar, but not any less Epic for that. Unlike Manowar, who showed their best right away, Virgin Steele have improved album after album.
Virgin Steele: Guardians Of The Flame
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Definitely more mature compared to the unripe debut, Defeis finds a vocal dimension that is much more suited to his style, and Jack Starr's hard rock outbursts become closer to the Epic genre. The result is touching pieces like "A Cry in The Night," the faster "Life Of Crime" and "Burn The Sun," and the grand Titletrack. 3.5 rounded up to 4 solely for that wonder of a song called "The Redeemer."
It’s hard for me to consider this work as an album by Virgin Steele. Too many tracks dragged out excessively, some disjointed (Devilhead, Glamour, Fallen Angels), others where the now-faded voice of Defeis is irritatingly not utilized to its best (Delirium, We Disappear), with only a few songs worth saving (Black Sun-Black Mass, Persephone), all surrounded by a disgraceful production and endless shrieks and meows. I can agree that the band doesn’t want to release an album that’s the same as the last one, but if Defeis had continued down the path taken with the underrated The Black Light Bacchanalia, we would now be talking about another masterpiece. But unfortunately, that’s not the case.

  • Harlan

I know how you feel about Invictus, so I won't insist. However, for me, the first two House Of Atreus albums maintained their personality and, above all, an excellent musical style. The next two are debatable instead, and very much so.
Virgin Steele show no signs of waning inspiration, and a year and a half after the release of the first chapter, they release the second part of The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell. Some of the tight rhythms that characterized the first part are lost, only to be replaced by a musical theatricality and a sound that is, at many points, pompous and almost flashy. The album will be cited by many as an inspiration for the Symphonic Metal genre. Pursino manages to create wonderful guitar passages, as in Crown Of Glory, Emalaith, Victory Is Mine, supported by a David Defeis in full maturity both in composition and vocals, managing to create surreal atmospheres in pieces like Prometheus, Twilight Of The Gods, or the tightly wound Devil/Angel and Symphony Of Steele. A masterpiece.
Virgin Steele: Age of Consent
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
What was supposed to represent the album of consecration for Virgin Steele becomes the point that could have led them to dissolution. The record label under which Age Of Consent was released went bankrupt shortly after its release, the tour was canceled, and for almost 5 years the VS monicker seemed to have vanished. However, this does not detract from the greatness of the pieces and the compositional artistic maturity reached by Defeis and Pursino, of which The Burning Of Rome (Cry For Pompeii) is the best example. Also worth mentioning is the power of songs like Let It Roar and the fantastic Lion In Winter, or the dramatic Tragedy and Cry Forever. A must-have for fans of the Epic genre, and essential for understanding the path of Virgin Steele as a turning point.
Virgin Steele: Visions of Eden
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
After a full 6 years since the last album, Defeis comes out with what is probably the most divisive record among Virgin Steele fans. A concept that traverses both heavy metal territories and the edge of the theatrical, featuring a masterful vocal interpretation of the characters. Slightly wordy, the album fails to win over many enthusiasts due to its stark differences from the works of the '90s, largely due to a production that was inadequate at the time. In the 2017 remixed version, however, this album finds its natural consecration with a production that lives up to the expectations. Perhaps the last great masterpiece of Virgin Steele.
W.A.S.P.: Dying for the World
CD Audio I have it ★★★
Composed by Lawless after the events of September 11th, and perhaps it is this hastiness in the composition that fails to give the album that sense of melancholy, as Unholy Terror did. It must be said, however, that tracks like Wicked Heart, Black Bone Torso, and the moving Halloweed Ground (even better in its acoustic version) work more than well. 3.5

I associate the term "porcheria" with Helldorado; that really was an attempt to win back past fans after the (excellent) experiment of K.F.D. However, this album, despite its ups and downs, manages to earn a passing grade for me.
W.A.S.P.: Golgotha
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
Probably the best work of the group from Unholy Terror. The Christian themes that Lawless wanted to focus on around the album do not clash; on the contrary, they help the listener immerse themselves more in the listening experience of the album. The recycling of the riff from Wild Child is felt as always, and Scream is proof of that, but the remaining tracks show that this is one of the best line-ups W.A.S.P. have had in years. Last Runaway and Shotgun bring back the energy that has always characterized the American group, and the poignant Fallen Under and the title track are simply to be listened to for Doug Blair's mastery on guitar, while Slaves Of The New World Order showcases a truly inspired Lawless both in lyrics and vocal performance. Six years of silence were needed, but it was definitely worth it.

Unjustly underestimated I would add, then with that Helldorado shift to please the more nostalgic fans, they fell pretty low. In the 2000s there were certainly some recycling, but for me, they always managed to maintain their own identity. The riff of Wild Child, as I've already mentioned, has been forcefully abused and adapted on many occasions (Mercy from Dominator, Craxzy from Babylon...). Then of course, these are tastes and thoughts...
