If Zen Arcade remains to this day one of the gospels of Alternative Rock, New Day Rising is its most logical continuation with a more mainstream sound and a more accessible format that best synthesizes the best ideas of the predecessor. The bold and daring Hart is no longer in the background; his songs are just as valuable as those of the insecure realist Bob. The countdown to their split had begun.

Eh, but the division will never be fair... we'll max out at 11-9 for Mould on Warehouse, the final chapter of the memorable saga of our heroes :)

You're right, Bob Mould has more songs, but in this specific case, I chose all three of Hart's tracks out of the six I posted today from New Day Rising, so we're talking about 50% each. Fewer songs from Mould, but the same compositional skill.

You know very well, dear Johnny, my absolute love for Husker Du; and you also know that "Zen Arcade" remains their unreachable peak for any band of the era and beyond. However, "New Day Rising" has some points in its favor: first of all, the stunning cover art and especially the opening of the title track, which is the best ever crafted by the band (even surpassing the auditory earthquake of Something I Learned Today from the aforementioned "Zen Arcade"). And what can we say about a song like Perfect Example that the boys from Athens, those R.E.M.; seem to have listened to quite a bit... ARMED EVOLUTION...

As I have already written, for me they are the most influential for the Alternative that was developing and one of the most influential in the Alternative realm overall.

New Day Rising is also the best for production; the sound is sharp and layered, almost shoegaze... like the contemporaries Jesus and Mary Chain.

As big as they are (and even more so the Minutemen), they managed to take Hardcore to another level, something "more." Truly incredible.

@nangaparbat exactly, they even anticipate shoegaze here

An absolute pleasure to talk about music with you. I agree with everyone who has shared their thoughts on this beautiful and important album. With nangaparbat, as mentioned in the previous comment, and for what was expressed later with DeMarga, Zen Arcade is unreachable, and R.E.M. and Husker Du have always had something in common with hjhhjij. Minutemen Double Nickels On The Dime is another gospel of Alternative Rock, and with Madcat, I also saw Shoegaze in it.

The Big Bang of Hardcore Punk songwriting. From epic, somewhat adolescent slogans to something deeper that digs into the human soul with the introverted Mould, the extroverted Hart, and Norton. A super trio among the most influential of all time.

The greatest and most complete Punk album ever. Where finally the writing that once limited itself to a few generational anthems and slogans (sometimes pathetically and hypocritically) became private, personal, and introspective. Few have managed to speak so effectively and unfiltered (Mould insecure like few) about the delicate transition from being a boy to becoming a man, with all the insecurities and frailties that come with it. Still unmatched to this day. Thank goodness there was Grant, who balanced Mould's insecurity.
