Live jazz fusion for a masterpiece album by Zappa that I recommend to anyone wanting to get closer to him, during the very Jazz fusion period.

A work of substance. Anyway, besides Gabriel, there are also the other 4 who deserve credit.

They had never been visionaries up to this point, not even in Supper's Ready. And unfortunately, they will never be again, sigh! For me, it is their artistic peak.

Yes, but this is the Genesis album for which Gabriel has the most credit; Banks and Rutherford wrote a good part of the music, but following the guidelines and the atmospheres desired by Gabriel's story. Then to say, as some do, that it’s almost Gabriel's first solo work is a huge load of nonsense, obviously.

True, it's all Gabriel's story. But the sounds and, for example, the guitar distortions, I mean the sound here is different. More aggressive. Underground. I don’t know if I’ve explained myself.

Yes, that's how it is because it follows the story of Gabriel, bitter, dark, distorted, and so are the sounds of Banks and Rutherford, who don't always compose in their preferred style on this record. This is indeed the group's most modern and daring album (not to mention the little touch of Brian Eno that appears every now and then, like in The Waiting Room). An album that I love to madness.

Even though, in the end, I think I prefer Foxtrot just a little bit more.

Anyway, a great album. Why Foxtrot? To be honest, I find all of them very beautiful. I might be a bit biased, but I adore all of them up to and including Duke. More or less. I don't have a favorite one, except maybe Selling and Nursey.

    I wanted to write Nursery..
    Sorry.

"Maybe I'm a bit biased, but I love them all up to and including Duke." Likewise, it seems you overlooked that Genesis are on the podium of my all-time favorites, irreplaceable. Foxtrot is perfect; of course, I love them all from Trespass to Seconds Out, and Duke is also a very good pop record, except for 2 or 3 stylistic missteps.

Okay. I assume the other two on your podium are Minogue and Miles Davis :-DDDDDDDDDDDDD
  • hjhhjij
    14 nov 13
No, you're mistaken. Miles Davis isn't here :D Jokes aside, the other two are Van Der Graaf and King Crimson. Davis is a different thing; I place him in Jazz. Among the soloists, Hammill, Buckley, and Waits are untouchable, but also Wyatt and Nick Drake.

In general, Davis, Mingus, Ellington, Coltrane, and Parker don't fight.

It's the album I like the least among those of the classic lineup. There's Rutherford's clunky first track, the ending of The Cinema Show feels too long and a bit boring, and then, the standout track, Firth of Fifth, would have been even better in my opinion if Gabriel had written the lyrics. This is just my personal opinion; I think Banks has many artistic qualities, but as a lyricist, he is what he is.
  • hjhhjij
    14 nov 13
But not really, he wrote The Fountain of Salmacis ;) Of course, writing lyrics isn't his best talent, but he has managed well several times (not the Firth of Fifth, indeed).

A record that I really enjoy, especially Hackett's work on the guitar, the piano intro by Banks in "Firth" is set as my ringtone on my phone, lovely.

The point of no return in the discography of Jethro, much like Tales by Yes. Technically superb, it suffers from a bit too much drama and heaviness in the themes addressed, and it is less fluid than its predecessor, but rich in brilliant ideas. It requires multiple listens to be fully appreciated.

I agree with Tony Montana. Ultimately, an album that's too underrated and often ridiculed. Unjustly.

Well... It has some splendid moments and that’s beyond question, but overall it bores me a bit; with the previous one, I enjoyed it from the first to the last second, but unfortunately not with this one. And anyway, I prefer "Minstrel" and the '77-'79 trilogy all my life, of course it's a very personal opinion.

In my opinion, more than tough, it's a partial, I emphasize partial, screw-up. Just my personal opinion. But I like it, anyway.
