I believe I am the only person in the world who prefers any of My War, this, Loose Nut, In My Head, and The Process to the hardcore milestone Damaged. Oh well. In other words, from 10 years of career between '76 and '86, I prefer the years '84-'85, with Kira and Bill. Looking for friends.

Just think, I only re-evaluated My War recently. Before, I didn't like it much, but now I adore it. Damn, that B-side... Unfortunately, the ones that came after I like less. Even though I still like them, huh! Damaged, however, remains one of my desert island albums :)

I completely understand you. Damaged is an album that deserves all the reverence in the world, unfinished in its completeness and vice versa, solid, fundamental. Definitely more so than the previous EPs/7". However, the subsequent ones, for my tastes, have an extra gear (perhaps it's due to the variety and length of the tracks) and in fact, I listen to them even more. It’s not like we are talking about abyssal differences, especially with My War... Beat my head against the wall could easily fit right in the middle of Damaged.

Lou Reed: Metal Machine Music
CD Audio I have it ★
The intent was probably a mix between messing around, serious boycotting, and ribbing. The result is a contemporary work of art, nothing more, nothing less. The first experiment of this kind within "commercial" music, outside of the avant-gardes. Unlistenable, thus perfect. If you like it, there's something wrong with you. No point in going on about it too much: it's a record of pure noise.

Here we are at the lowest point of guitar compositions. The worst of the worst. But not just guitar compositions: in fact, every album reviewed by Darius is decidedly worse than Metal Machine Music.

This record was born as a reaction from a brain that was going bad, as a reaction against the record industry and as an act of self-harm; Iggy was cutting himself, and he was producing a similar record. I don't think there were any experimental intents; probably contractual reasons were at play—he still had to make an album to free himself from a binding contract, and he did it... in his own way.
  • kaiser soze

Pure avant-garde. It’s a shame it hasn’t been understood yet. It’s not an easy record; it requires a certain number of listens to be fully appreciated.
  • << Pure avant-garde. It's a pity it hasn't been understood yet. >> Lou Reed has admitted time and again that this album was born out of contractual obligations, and he had fun making a piece of crap to mock the record label that dropped him right after this album. There's really a lot to understand...

  • aerdna
    25 oct 13
It's true that it hasn't been understood by many, especially by those trying to find what isn't there. It's not entirely true that it requires a certain number of listens to be comprehended: it’s just an hour of noise or, if you prefer, "feedback and distorted sounds of electric guitar amplified with tunings that are dogshit or intentionally designed to be that way." For this reason, it's a work of art and a masterpiece, because it's extreme and because it can never be matched without being copied. Musical avant-gardes are not just about music but often and willingly are sound experiments. This too is a sound experiment, only that the intent was not to experiment but was "a mix of messing around, serious sabotage, and mocking." More than anything, in my opinion (but I could be wrong, the boundaries are blurry), it can't be considered avant-garde precisely because it is a commercial product in every sense (even if unbeknownst to the record label), thus destined for the common people.

"That's why it's a work of art and a masterpiece, because it's extreme and because it can never be copied without being copied." Sometimes, you go looking for trouble.

Masterpiece of the grotesque, implied. Which must be contextualized with "Unlistenable therefore perfect. If you like it, there's something wrong with you." and with the score. Come on, since I have nothing to do for the next 3 minutes, let me clarify: I wrote that it's pure noise. Personally, pure noise doesn't drive me crazy; in fact, I really hate it. Anyway, to match it, or to make a record that's just electric guitar noise, you have to do it this way, which means copying it.

Many have tried to give a conceptual meaning to an album that has none... it was created by a disturbed Lou Reed to free himself from the constraints of a contract, with no intellectual pretensions, his own words. Certainly, it is an extreme album; I don't attend the avant-garde, but surely someone had already proposed a similar operation, and it is certainly not a masterpiece. If I’m not mistaken, someone has re-released the album in an orchestral version or something like that...

Even the sounds in the street are unrepeatable unless you replace the same cars with the same people at the same time the next day. You can still recreate it the next day with different cars and different people, resulting in a wonderfully original concert of honks and “go, it’s green.” The difference lies in the fact that a prankster records it for a record label, and the fools who follow it label it as “a hideous masterpiece” and “a work of art.” Put shit in a museum, and it becomes a work of art for geniuses like aerdna. This is just the first phase, but I’ll stop here since you, with all the good will, will never get there with round two.

No, if anything, the idiots see things that don't exist. And I've written that. For me, it's pure noise. And I've written that too. Then, I'm an idiot for other reasons, that's true, and I'm writing it now. Explain to me why it's not a work of art; the fact that "a joker records it for a record label" doesn't count because I've already written that. Instead, do something constructive instead of following the idiots and thus looking like a fool: recommend me some prog rock albums from the '60s and '70s, since you seem knowledgeable and I am completely ignorant on the subject.
  • aerdna

By the way, what the hell does traffic have to do with it, only you know, but we all love you for that. "feedback and distorted sounds of electric guitars amplified with tunings that are dogshit or studied to be so" quote this. If someone wants to make noise rock, what’s more noise than pure noise? Esticazzi. With a bit of joking around, he made the most noise rock record in history. Not the most beautiful, not the ugliest, but the perfect standard for the genre you can't go beyond. He could have spared us that it was nothing happening; it would have just been a theoretical standard. And instead, he did it.
  • aerdna

Then you trash it a lot (terribly, obviously), but I gave it a 1 and wrote that if you like it, there's something wrong with you. Are you not going to mention that? And recommend me some prog-rock albums instead of just mocking randomly.

Alright, I've had to spoon-feed you with a thousand words and unnecessary explanations just because you can't read the last sentence: "There's no point in dragging this out any further: it's a record of pure noise." Sorry if I specified it only in the comment below "of electric guitar," I thought people would get it on their own but evidently not. Sorry if I can't express myself as clearly as you do. • aerdna
    25 oct 13
I only partially agree with your point. I generalized, it’s true, but not by too much. What saves me in a pinch is the fact that I intentionally wrote "contemporary" art. In contemporary art, a lot of nonsense, more or less conceptual, is considered as works, whether you like it or not. Here, there's zero concept, even if the disdain towards the record label might count as one (in 50 years it will, I’ll bet my balls on it) but this record could easily fit into pop art. Does it evoke emotions? Yes, for me, negative ones (this type of art exists, whether you like it or not).
  • aerdna
    25 oct 13
Is it a symbol of a genre? Yes, it's a true standard. Does it transfigure the genre? Yes, it goes beyond music, which, by the way, isn't even there. Just because it came out randomly and you and I could have done it too doesn't mean it's not a work of art. It should be music, it has its commercial value, it breaks the conventions of a genre but fits perfectly into contemporary art, it's a masterpiece because no one has ever done better; it's horrible because it's horrible in every aspect, from conception to realization... I don't know, for me it makes sense. Clearly, if Lou Reed had never become a musician, if noise rock hadn't existed, if the record label hadn't released it, it would have been just crap like anything else. My judgment is 1, but for someone else it could be 6, 1000, and I wouldn't have anything to argue.
  • Spettinami !
    25 oct 13
You are very conditioned by the fact that it’s a record, and he obviously played with the listener's naivety. My name is Lou Reed, and I’m a cuckold. I intentionally sound like nonsense, but first my name will reach your ears, and then the medium on which I record it. Free yourself from this nonsense, go out and listen to the concert for klaxon, which is a true work of art, and you’re letting it slip away.

Neurosis: A Sun That Never Sets
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Essentially perfect album, except for one small insignificant detail that I just can't accept: the fade-out ending of a few too many songs! Because it's fine to convey the sense of cosmic inconclusiveness of a post-society trying to rise from its own ruins, and it’s okay that the tracks are always quite lengthy... but ending songs with a fade-out is a trick that I can tolerate once or twice at most, not more!

The subsequent "The Eye of Every Storm" is, on the other hand, THE complete masterpiece (except for Bridges, which is good but has never fully convinced me, and it’s almost 12 minutes long; the rest is perfect) with a devastating, insane, super title track. I've heard quite a few criticisms about "Given to the Rising"... let’s say it’s an album that is, on one hand, immediate (it can’t fail to please those who love doom, with those earth-shattering riffs) and on the other hand has an ambient atmospheric work that cruelly seeps in slowly. A great work that is anything but monotonous and should be listened to with a lot of attention; with each listen, there’s a new nuance (of black).
  • Psychopathia
    30 sep 13
Right. I’ll tell you, apart from the first (which isn’t my style) and the last one being a bit weak, I like all of them from soul to zero, even the "different" given to the rising. What an immense band... I’ve spent a fortune on these records. By the way, “su that” is the second one I listened to, and I thought that the ending of the last track was a defect of the CD!

They were the first, I believe, to merge (those) different styles. But I have to admit that only with the new direction, starting with this album onward, did they align with my tastes... I rediscovered the old albums thanks to those post-2000, and I probably wouldn't have paid them much attention if they had continued with the (respectable) style of Times of Grace... Especially due to the singing, which has physiologically changed (for my tastes, for the better) :-)

Since many like to label them post-rock (at least in Spiderland), I’ll give my own categorization: this is their noise-math rock album. And "Spiderland" is their slowcore album. Both are masterpieces, both are not objectively perfect as some pretentious people would like to believe, both owe a lot to several records in the indie/alternative scene rather than the other way around; yet both are highly individual and have aged perfectly, if not even not aged at all.

The Prodigy: The Fat Of The Land
CD Audio I have it ★★
I must have been 18-19 years old back then. A very nice collective, which is actually just one guy surrounded by 3-4 bouncy Mauri Repetti. I still like Smack My Bitch Up and Diesel Power with Kool Keith, but the rest not so much. From the earlier stuff, I only have a vague memory of watered-down but super flashy d'n'b that screams THE NINETIES very loudly. The later ones are horrendous, although some beats aren't bad. He should have teamed up with a serious rapper, been a bit more prolific, and dared a little more. Oh well.

I should mention that it's one of my favorite albums in general, but to be honest, it has a slight weakness. Entwistle's track isn't as extraordinary as the others; I think he's done better work. Still, it's a five with honors and an academic kiss.
