    Yeah... well... aside from the founding bands of the genre... it's all crap... Sonata Arctica and Dragonforce especially.

    I don't understand anything, could you explain to me how it works: is power metal the gothic one? Or is it the one that deals with elves and dwarves? I don't get it.

    Rupert, power metal today is all about ultra-melodic choruses, keyboards, and dragons and elves (Rhapsody style)... originally (late 80s/early 90s) it was played by several German bands that drew from British heavy sounds... like Helloween, Gamma Ray, Running Wild, Grave Digger, and the Brazilians Angra... these, for me, are the only ones worth listening to...

    maximum respect for Savatage (power? well, not just that) and Rhapsody ("Legendary Tales" and "Symphony of Enchanted Land 1" are beautiful). I've always kept my distance from everything else. In this genre there are also Hammerfall and Gamma Ray. Symphony X may lean more towards prog, but they fit in.
