Published a few months after "End Times" and the last volume of the trilogy that began with "Hombre Lobo" in 2009, "Tomorrow Morning" is an album with a more optimistic mood than the previous one but still less carefree than "Hombre Lobo." The cover signifies a rebirth, a new period in Everett's life after his divorce from his wife. After a brief intro, "I’m A Hummingbird" starts with string arrangements and short electronic experiments accompanying E's almost spoken word lyrics. The calm atmosphere of the first tracks is interrupted by "Baby Loves Me," characterized by the use of beats, synths, and other electronic gimmicks. With this track and the following "Spectacular Girl," Mr. E confirms having found love again, but has lost some of his songwriting flair.
The six minutes of "This Is Where It Gets Good" become unbearable right from the start, showing us an artist not at his best, trying to stretch the soup with the usual toy-pop arrangements. The subsequent tracks confirm the decline in songwriting quality already noticed in the previous two albums, now richer than ever in fillers. The gospel "Looking Up" and the minimal "I Like The Way This Is Going" are not enough to uplift an album too rich in style missteps.
In conclusion, "Tomorrow Morning" is still an album that is easy to listen to, but it contains nothing that has not been done before by good old Mark. It is hoped that the ongoing recording hiatus of the Eels will prove useful for future releases.
