Honestly, I have never understood what EELS means as the name of the band, even though when I look in the dictionary, I find EEL: Anguilla!!?? I say, alright, overlooking the obscure meaning of the band's name and the fact that more than a band, Eels are two friends, one on guitar and one on drums, who enlist the collaboration of some musicians on winds and keyboards, to create elegant Pop with jazzy rhythms and folk/country guitars.
"Daisies Of The Galaxy" is the first album I buy on sale for 10 euros and which I think is worth every penny paid! With a wide range of songs (a full 14 + a bonus track titled "Mr. E Beautiful Blues") that find their natural habitat in the album cover. In fact, if you were to listen to the album, associating the sounds with the elements of the landscape, you'd find yourself perfectly immersed in it. A song with an ambiguous title like "I Like Birds", which makes me ponder the author's gender, is immediately portrayed in the extensive array of birds painted on the inner cover! Also beautiful are the melodies of "Packing Blankets", "A Daisy Through Concrete", and "Wooden Nickels" that manage to enchant despite the repetitiveness of the same chords for most of the album. The lyrics are certainly not the product of a metaphysical philosophical mind but of a naturalistic dreamer with a ready sarcastic quip and a curse word in every verse!
I tried to interpret the cover which at first glance seems silly but in its entirety leaves frequent perplexities and doubts (existential??? no certainly not!). What does the girl with the stick represent, who seems almost to want to point at/whip the small twin poodles with empty alien-like gazes? Not to mention the back, where two children, as tall as a flower, smile with two hunting rifles in their hands!!!???
EELS... what are you smoking?
They make simple music that goes straight to the heart, pure poetry.
Daisies Of The Galaxy stands out from the others for its carefree and cheerful nature.
This is fundamentally the world we walk in with Mr. E: it is the simplicity of a child’s pastel drawings.
With this ballad, Mr. E bids farewell to the beautiful sadness of his past works and announces to everyone that 'damn, it’s a beautiful day!'
This Eels album is truly wonderful, characterized by soft colors and dreamlike atmospheres capable of moving and making the listener dream.
An absolute must-have.
