Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) was a Norwegian composer of the Romantic era, known for works that incorporate Norwegian folk elements such as the Piano Concerto in A minor, the Peer Gynt suites and the Lyric Pieces.

Composed incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt (from which the Peer Gynt Suites are derived). Influenced by Mendelssohn, Schumann and Liszt. Married Nina Hagerup. Major works include Piano Concerto in A minor, Peer Gynt Suites (Op.46 & Op.55), Lyric Pieces, Holberg Suite and Nordic Melodies Op.63.

The reviews praise Grieg's lyricism and national voice, highlighting the Piano Concerto in A minor, the Peer Gynt Suites and the Nordic Melodies. Performances by Lilya Zilberstein and Neeme Järvi with the Gothenburg Symphony are singled out. The writing emphasizes Grieg's roots in late Romanticism and his use of folk elements.

For:Classical-music listeners, students, and fans of Romantic-era and Norwegian nationalist music

He was a champion of late romanticism shaped by the guidance of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Liszt, yet absolutely unique in his yearning for contamination with popular musical elements, the use of which was intended to be functional in creating a national compositional style.
