THE REVIEW

Sometimes art is born from pain and disorientation: Edoardo released this album in 1999, the year he lost two people dear to him (his mother and his partner, the latter of whom died in a car accident in which he himself nearly lost his life); though born from despair, this work is an anthem to life and love; as with the following "Sbandato," here too we are faced with a concept album revolving around the female figure, the only beacon and certainty "to cross the world" with its atrocities and ugliness; one must take refuge in feelings, this is the message Edoardo gives us with great sensitivity and without ever being banal. This message is sometimes shouted ("Che ci sei") and sometimes whispered with unexpected sweetness.

Deserving of a special mention is "Mare chiaro mare scuro": I consider it one of Bennato's most beautiful songs; in this piece, our artist bares himself and does so with disarming simplicity, here you capture all the fragility that comes from the life events he has gone through; "Le ragazze fanno grandi sogni" contains a tribute to Bob Dylan, Bennato's great reference: the opening guitar riff echoes "Hurricane", a splendid Dylan song contained in a historic album "Desire"; surprising is "c'è": a wonderful blues piece, exemplary is Edoardo's interpretation here; "Tutti", "Afferrare una stella" are splendid love songs, heartfelt and delicate; "elogio alla follia" is an autobiographical piece where Bennato references Erasmus of Rotterdam to speak of himself with great naturalness.

I consider this album (the first with the EMI label) the best work of Bennato in the '90s; we are certainly far from the grandeur of the past, but here is a less "hard" Bennato than in the past but incredibly true; he has never been a "love" songwriter, but he knows how to narrate love very well; I recommend listening to this record, you will rediscover a great artist capable like few of COMMUNICATING with his art: music.

Tracklist Lyrics Videos

01   Le ragazze fanno grandi sogni (03:15)

Le ragazze fanno grandi sogni
forse peccano di ingenuità
ma l'audacia le riscatta sempre
non le fa crollare mai

Le ragazze sono come fiori
profumati di fragilità
ma in amore sono come querce...
...E qui dall'altra parte...

E qui dall'altra parte siamo noi
incerti ed affannati siamo noi
violenti ed impacciati siamo noi
che, non ne veniamo mai
a capo, mai a capo...
Noi sicuri e controllati siamo noi
convinti e indaffarati siamo noi
che, non ne veniamo mai a capo
mai a capo...

Forse questo non è tutto vero
sono angeli a metagrave
ma se gli angeli son fantasia
le ragazze invece sono qua

Le ragazze come le comete
quando brillano vuol dire che
hanno già deciso di tuffarsi

E qui dall'altra parte
E qui dall'altra parte siamo noi...
