Art runs in the family of 'Eagle-eye' Cherry.
His father was the great jazz musician Don Cherry. His sister is none other than Neneh Cherry, you might know her? The one who sang a duet with Youssou N'Dour in the memorable "7 Seconds".
It is the debut album of the artist. There are two versions, one released in 1997 with one song less: "Falling in Love Again". And a 1998 version with the aforementioned song added. The covers also differ (the one shown here is the '98 version). (-As I didn't know anything at the time, I got the 'unlucky' version with one song less- But never mind, the radios made up for it by playing it every day. In fact, the second single "Falling in Love Again" quickly became a 'hit' of that period).
The album is truly respectable, a Rock-Blues with guitars taking the lead, in a very pleasant sound. The first single was the unforgettable "Save Tonight": if we part ways tomorrow, we must at least say a proper goodbye tonight, wise and charming Eagle-eye said. Besides the two singles, the splendid ones worth mentioning are: "Indecision", "Comatose (In the Arms of Slumber)", "When Mermaids Cry", "Shooting Up In Vain" with a vocal and guitar sound that resembles Ben Harper's sound a lot. But it is at the end where we find the best part of the album: the wonderfully melancholic chorus of "Permanent Tears" and the last track that gives the title to the album "Desireless" by Don Cherry... piano, trumpet and voice intertwine in a compelling, enveloping and heart-wrenching jazz sound.
A work dedicated to the memory of the father 1936 - 1995.
If in the heaven of jazz musicians, CDs, players, and speakers circulate, then the great Don Cherry can only revel in what his son has dedicated to him. He will return in the following years with another handful of albums, but the best of eagle-eye is to be sought among these tracks.
