When a Duran Duran album is released, there's always a hum of criticism, and upon the release of "Red Carpet Massacre," there are many from the fans themselves. But "Red Carpet Massacre" is an album that encapsulates the evolution of Duran in lyrics and themes as well as in music. Catchy in certain moments, but it's only an impression; the tracks are meticulously crafted, rediscovering a Duran sound that is at once innovative and pleasing.
It starts with "The Valley" an excellent entrée that speaks of life's difficulties, and it's almost like seeing them while listening to the song. Then you hear the moments where the gear shifts, and you head back onto the roads and through the cities. The tracks should be listened to in sequence because they punctuate moments like RCM, the Title Track, where a new sound is mixed with punk, and where they battle against the Red Carpet world.
"Nite Runner," "Falling Down," "Box full of Honey," three tracks that blend different moments of Duran, "Nite Runner" even called by the Duran themselves the new "Notorious", "Falling Down" wants to be the new "Ordinary World", but in my opinion, it is something more; it is a poignant ballad, simple yet overwhelming. "Box Full of Honey" another typical Duran piece that doesn't find space in this album but fits well in alternating the different styles.
The central part of the album is nu-dance "Skin divers" the second single and "Tempted," the first in collaboration with Timbaland, then there's an instrumental break "Tricked out" (a sort of "interlude" like in "Big Thing") because the album changes sound and returns to exclusively Duranian sounds like "Zoom in" (also in collaboration with Timbaland) where it talks about the not-too-real world of Second Life.
"She's too much" the sweetest song ever written dedicated to the DD leader's daughter, Saffron, and also "Dirty Great Monster" and "Last Man Standing" where it returns to a less gloomy Dark sound but more current.
In short, "Red Carpet Massacre" is truly a great album in 2008.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
04 Falling Down (05:41)
Once was a man who consumed his place and time
He thought nothing could touch him
But here and now it's different storyline
Like the straw he's clutching
Why has the sky turned grey?
Hard to my face and cold on my shoulder
And why has my life gone astray?
Scarred by disgrace, I know that it's over
Because I'm falling down.
With people standing 'round
But before i hit the ground,
Is there time
Could I find
Someone out there to help me
Howl at the wind rushing past my lonely head.
Caught inside its own motion.
How I wish it was somebody else instead
Howling at all this corrosion.
Why did the luck run dry?
Laugh in my face, so pleased to desert me
Why do the cruel barbs fly?
Now when disgrace can no longer hurt me
Because I'm falling down
With people standing 'round
But before I hit the ground
Is there time
Could I find
Someone out there to help me
You see I'm falling down
With people standing 'round
But before I hit the ground
Is there time
Could I find
Someone out there to help me
Because I'm falling down
With people standing 'round
But before I hit the ground
Is there time
Could I find
Someone out there to help me
You see I'm falling down
With people standing 'round
But before I hit the ground
Is there time
Could I find
Someone out there to help me
I don't know why...
I don't know why...
I don't know why...
I don't know why...
