From Blue to a solo career without batting an eyelid (or almost). Some say that's the beauty of a boyband: Andrew Lloyd-Webber doesn't comment but in December 2004 he bets on a great future as a solo artist (and since he's a musical legend, his opinion carries a lot of weight).

The compliment is all for Duncan James, 1 meter and 80 centimeters of beauty, English to the core (born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on April 7, 1979). As they say, starting off with a bang: after a couple of experiments as a singer, in 2000 Duncan James becomes a member of Blue. From here on, it's all a succession of record sales, fans in a frenzy, and fame galore. But it doesn't take long for each of the blue guys to start looking at a solo career with interest: they say it's not about ending Blue, but rather about exploring new paths.

The first to do so is Duncan himself, who, in the summer of 2004, receives the classic offer you can't refuse: Andrew Lloyd Webber asks him to sing one of the songs from "Lady In White," his latest musical (after making history with "Evita," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Cats," and "The Phantom of the Opera," not small stuff). The song is titled "I Believe My Heart", sung as a duet with Keedie, released as a single by EMI and reaches the second position in his homeland. Not bad as a hypothesis for a solo career. Things get more serious a few months later: EMI-Virgin offers him £500,000 to create his first solo album. He accepts, involves Lloyd Webber in composing a couple of tracks, and prepares for the adventure.
