1998 - After the release of their latest studio album "Falling into Infinity", the American band composed of James LaBrie on vocals, Mike Portnoy on drums, John Petrucci on guitars, John Myung on bass, and finally the now replaced Derek Sherinian on keyboards, released their second live CD (after the short but acclaimed "Live At The Marquee") titled Once In A Livetime.
The album, as you can immediately notice, is rich in songs from their latest work, which some consider a flaw and others a strength. However, the D.T. also play several tracks from older albums, driving the French audience crazy. The concert is filled with gems played excellently with their usual precision and skill, even if perhaps they have produced far more engaging live performances with more appealing sounds: indeed, after the first few songs, LaBrie seems to lose some of his charisma, and in my opinion, Myung's bass is not highlighted enough.
The choice of songs is the strong point of the double CD: it ranges from chaotic and destructive songs like "Lie" or "Just Let Me Breathe" to memorable tracks like "Take The Time" or "Voices". There are also ballads like "Hollow Years" and "Take Away My Pain"; improvisations are not lacking either, as Petrucci, Portnoy, and Sherinian all showcase their skills. The guitarist's solo is very interesting, as he enjoys playing "Paradigm Shift" during his eight-minute solo set, with the help of the drummer, his version of the flight of the bumblebee, and a pleasant tarantella.
A very peculiar choice is playing "A Change Of Seasons" in separate acts, allowing the audience to listen to the song from another perspective.
In short, it is a very tasteful album that offers the listener a wide selection of tracks and conveys the emotions the band can deliver in concert.
"Dream Theater do not repeat themselves easily."
"A fantastic live, which deserves to be listened to and appreciated even in a minimal part."
