Let's talk a little about this new live from the Dream.
At first glance, the choice of songs seems quite spot-on; the songs are taken from different concerts, probably due to LaBrie who unfortunately can no longer endure 3-hour concerts like in past tours. However, despite my great expectations for video quality (I was used to the high definition of Score and Live At Budokan) I am quite disappointed here:
Cameras at times amateurish and shaky, low definition and often dismal directing.
Also, the mixing is not the best: the drum's bass drum is decisively lacking in bass and you only hear the cymbals (often annoying); bass is weak and muted, whereas the guitars are perfect (perhaps a bit too loud) and the keyboard sounds impeccable; LaBrie's voice is heavily effected and too sharp... it completely lacks expressiveness.
The performances are excellent, except for a few songs where Petrucci slightly slows down. The only downside is really the voice: it doesn't fill, at times extremely annoying with exaggerated vibratos (see "Scarred", "Lines In The Sand" and "Surrounded"); it's not about pitch issues but simply about tonal deficiency.
Now let's move to the songs: excellent realization of tracks like "Take The Time" (the best live version they have ever done, even though it's presented in an a-bridged version), "Surrounded", "Forsaken", "Shmedley Wilcox" (truly delightful and spot-on from start to finish) and "The Ministry Of Lost Souls". The flaws are tracks like "Panic Attack" (bass and guitar can't keep up with the rest; even a cymbal detaches from Portnoy during the song: I really don't understand why they included it), "Scarred" (LaBrie doesn't reach the highs of the first verse) and "Blind Faith", crudely realized (we are still talking about technique monsters) for their technical skills, especially in the guitar-keyboard unison solo.
To sum it up a bit, it's certainly not their best live but not the worst either. I recommend purchasing the audio version as the quality of the DVD is quite low (believe me, it seems like a concert from the '70s). Let's take Dream for what they are now and continue to support them!!!
