Not long after the release of the great debut album 'The Valley of the Damned', the most cosmopolitan band in metal (a South African, an Asian, a New Zealander, a Slav, and a Frenchman!), that is Dragonforce, attempts another coup with this "Sonic Firestorm", relying on the card that allowed them to stand out from the crowd of power bands: speed, speed, and more speed!!! And, indeed, the drummer and guitarists reach unprecedented speeds, at least in the power realm.
The first three songs are excellent My Spirit will go, Fury of the Storm and Fields of Despair; all catchy and well-constructed, although none shines with originality.
Rest your ears with Dawn over a world; a decent ballad where the singer can unleash his voice, usually suffocated by the instruments; and Above the Winter Moonlight, a song that, despite being as fast as the others, gives a unique sense of harmony, quite original. Soldiers of the Wastedland is the longest track of the album (nine and a half minutes) and, although beautiful, shows some vocal issues.
The album closes with Prepare for War and Once in a Lifetime, which leave a vague sense of Deja-vu: the first notes of Prepare for War, in fact, are identical to those of 'Fury of the Storm'.
Even if not on the level of the previous one, this album will give you fifty minutes of very well-played Extreme Power; if instead, you are looking for originality, go somewhere else.
"DragonForce became famous right from their first demo and topped all the power metal charts."
"Sonic Firestorm is a sonic fury, a dive into extreme power metal, but it has a small flaw compared to its predecessor because it is a bit monotonous and repetitive."
