Old school thrash metal never dies, a genre that continues to be appreciated by most metalheads and at the same time sees several new faces joining the sacred names of the scene. Therefore, it is a pleasure to come across an album like "Punishment For The Infidels," because in addition to having that '80s flavor, it offers us a good half-hour of sonic slashes that will hardly leave those who grew up with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer indifferent. It's an "ignorant" album, unafraid of being ungraceful or perhaps less "politically correct" due to its anything but delicate artwork; "Punishment For The Infidels" is this, a work that certainly knows what it's about. An album that, as tradition dictates, has sounds we could call "natural," with no tweaks on the mixer, its riffs as raw as the frontman's angry screams, managing to carve out its own space in a musical context on the brink of madness. Although starting from old school American-style thrash metal, Downfall have broadened their horizons, pushing to the limit of death metal and making everything even more energetic with a good dose of hardcore that, as we know, goes quite well with thrash metal. In short, truly an excellent release, tailor-made for those who - like myself - occasionally love to go back a few years in terms of heavy music.
