Donald Eugene Cherry (1936–1995) was an American jazz trumpeter known for his role in the free-jazz movement and for blending jazz with musical traditions from around the world.

Played trumpet (including pocket trumpet) and cornet; early collaborator with Ornette Coleman; led projects combining free jazz and world-music elements; recorded albums including Brown Rice and Organic Music Society.

Two DeBaser reviews focus on Don Cherry's trajectory from free-jazz pioneer to world-music explorer. Brown Rice is presented as a masterpiece mixing raga, African music, free and funk. Organic Music Society is described as an expansive, wandering double LP rooted in organized spontaneity and spiritual searching.

For:jazz listeners, free-jazz fans, world-music listeners, record collectors
