The Profile

Doctor Nerve is an American avant-rock ensemble founded by guitarist/composer Nick Didkovsky. Known for complex, algorithmically assisted compositions and tightly arranged horns and guitar, the group has released influential work on Cuneiform Records.

A 1992 Cuneiform CD, "Armed Observation / Out To Bomb Fresh Kings," compiles Doctor Nerve’s first two EPs (1985 and 1987). Nick Didkovsky, a programmer, developed the Java Music Specification Language (JMSL) used for algorithmic composition, with the ensemble arranging and performing the generated material.

A 5-star review celebrates Doctor Nerve’s 1992 Cuneiform compilation that joins their first two EPs. The music blends heavy, physical rhythms with intricate, atonal horn parts and strategic guitar. Nick Didkovsky’s JMSL-driven, algorithmic approach is central—the machine composes, humans arrange and perform. The result is cerebral yet visceral, and rewarding without requiring technical context.
