It's not easy to manipulate samples and succeed in creating tracks with a certain freshness.
DJ Shadow's strength has always been this: to manage and shape samples of truly unknown songs. Years of vinyl history.
Starting from the premise that an album like "Endtroducing.....", an original debut like few others, will hardly ever be surpassed or even reached, this is the album that comes closest to its quality and assortment. It must be said that DJ Shadow releases records very sporadically: 4 records from 1996 (debut) to 2011 (this album).
Classifying these records is a daunting task but, at the same time, it's better this way. The genre doesn’t matter at all.
We are faced with 16 tracks completely different from each other: much less scratching/turntablism but more sharp guitars on fast tracks, relaxing tracks with the piano as the protagonist, "old school" tracks with more instrumental Hip Hop and various guests lending their talent (one of them being Posdnuos from De La Soul).
Although there is no real common thread among all these tracks, the album is by no means boring and is very enjoyable.
From the purely Rock energy coming from the guitar assault in "Back To Front (Circular Logic)", the tortured calm of the acoustic "I've Been Trying", the sad notes of the chapters "Sad And Lonely" and "(Not So) Sad And Lonely", to the beautiful and soothing female voice in "Scale It Back" there's something for everyone's taste.
In summary, DJ Shadow's best work since "Endtroducing.....".
