Who is Dj Quik? Have we ever heard his name in the international scene? Is he good? Maybe I can answer that last question: yes, definitely.

In 1991, his first album, "Quik Is The Name," was released, a sort of "introduction" to future fans, as if to say, "hey guys, here I come, I won't disappoint you!" He is a producer-mc who established himself in various underground mixtapes and will be consecrated by this very product, which also became a platinum record.

The album offers us beats heavily influenced by funk, jazz, and raw rap, with incisive and direct lyrics, a hard and determined sound. For these very reasons, it was well-received by critics, but it did not achieve the expected sales success due to the poor sponsorship from Quik's label.

The album opens with what was destined to become an underground hit, "Sweet Black Pussy," created as a possible club song but never played on the radio or video due to the overly explicit sexual content. You're smart enough, my friends, to understand that this track means "sweet black p**sy". Quik's flow in this song is exceptional on a sound level, and the beat is equally so.

The second track is another bomb, "Tonite": over a really exceptional beat that excites me every time I hear it, Quik raps fantastically, talking about how to spend evenings at a club, with friends and girls, a beer at hand; forgetting what's around you, focusing only on those toned and firm breasts in front of you, with the nightclub lights coming and going. Coming and going. Coming and going. And you don't notice what's happening in the surrounding environment. Deep. The author himself calls this gem "eternal," stating that people will keep listening to it for a long time. Third song, third classic, third masterpiece: "Born And Raised In Compton," where the DJ confirms himself as an excellent beatmaker, mc, and showcases amazing scratches, naturally, as a good Dj. In this track, our artist wants to talk to us about how he grew up in the Compton neighborhood, amidst drugs, problems with his parents (you should know that his "folks" kicked him out of the house at the age of 16) and hygiene conditions. He further talks about how he started rapping and became a "street veteran".

The fourth track is "Deep," which, despite a good beat and Quik's flow, fails to reach the level of the previous ones. In "The Bombud" the beat takes us back to reggae atmospheres, probably because here the rapper praises the "art" of smoking weed. In the sixth track "Dedication," he talks about the "Quik's Groove". The seventh track is the title-track "Quik Is The Name," another classic: a funky beat for an explosive flow with which Quik talks to us at 360°; the scratched chorus is beautiful. In "Loked Out Hood" the atmosphere is dark and serious, where Quik talks about his gangsta days; note that in the track there is no chorus and the beat sometimes changes, making the song special in every way.

In "8 Ball," the ninth track, Quik talks about and praises the 8 Ball, a liquor heavily consumed in the ghettos, saying it's for real "niggaz" over a great beat; another nice track. Then we reach the tenth track, the first of the "Quik's Groove" (there's one in every Quik album); this is my favorite alongside the "Roger's Groove": a relaxing yet almost melancholic beat. After the Groove, there's the explosive "Tear It Off," where over a very fast beat, Quik and AMG rap greatly, transmitting a lot of energy.

"I Go That Feelin" is the twelfth track: in this case, Quik talks imaginatively to a girl and tells her what he'd like to do with her, all on a relaxing and cheerful beat, with R'n'B sounds and atmospheres. The thirteenth track is "Skanless," where Quik and all the members of his camp: AMG, Hi-C, and the 2nd II None (Gangsta D and KK, Quik's cousins) perform and shine: the beat is slow, sluggish, and below the album's average, all the mc's conclude the album decently.

In conclusion, what to say about this CD? Quik has created a fresh, pleasant, and very innovative product musically, being the first to revisit funk and jazz in his beats. I recommend everyone to listen to it even if not too closely, because excuse me, but it's really worth it.

Here we go

Yo, a day in the life of a player named Quik
I'm just a stubborn kind of fellow with a head like a brick
And just because I drink the 8, they say that I'm hopeless
But I don't give a fuck, so blame it on the loc-est
Now this is how we do it when we checkin a grip
Teddy Bear's in the house, so don't even trip
We're bustin funky compositions as smooth as a prism
So check it while I kick it to this funky ass rhythm
It's Friday morning, the phone is ringin off the hook *brrrrrring*
And AMG is puttin down girl rhymes in his notebook
Or should I say dope sack, because we don't bust wack *brrrrrring*
I pick up the phone and it's the D (whassup nigga?)
He said he's comin down at about two on the dot
So I'm about to rush the tub while my water's still hot
And now I'm soakin, a brother like the devestatin DJ Quik ain't jokin
Fuck with me on DSP and you'll get broken
My name is Quik, but you can call me Daddy
Yo open up the door, they think I'm Freak Man in a Caddy
Now Freaky's in an El doggin shabbies in at Alco
And everybody's sippin on a quart (here we go)
D just came with a forty and a quart
In addition to the three that Greedy just brought
But I don't wanna start early, so I just might
put my forty in the freezer cause I wanna get bent *tonite*

Tonight's the nite (yeah) *tonite*
Tonight is the nite *tonite*
Tonight's the nite (yo when we gon get bent) *tonite*
Tonight is the nite (aww yeah)

And now I'm out of the tub up in a fancy freak
Spray on some serious and put on my Girbaud jeans
Sweatsuit, the gray one with the burgundy trim
And it's a medium, fit me proper cause I'm nice and slim
Five thirty on the clock and the sun is steadily sinkin
And I am steadily thinkin about the 8 that I'll be drinkin
You know I ain't ashamed and you know I ain't bashful
So go on and pop the forty so I can pour me a glassful
Ham is in the bedroom rollin up a stencil
Fatter than a pinky and the length of a pencil
Freakie lit it up and hit it one two three
Shabby took a hit and then they pass it to me
It's the bomb!!!
Yo I can feel my senses Get numb!!!
Yo fuck the forty ounce I need some rum!!!
I'm chillin like a villain Here I come!!!
And that's how I'm livin
Tonight is the nite and I'm lookin real sporty
Proper Friday evening and I'm ready to party
Crusher came in with a handful of snaps
Fuck it, let's shoot some craps
(Yo what they in fo') A fin or a half
(Yo shoot that ten nigga) Don't make me laugh
Hi-C want a dove and he think that shit is funny
But I'm seven and eleven and I'm takin niggaz money *tonite*

Tonight's the nite (yeah watch me fuck the hoe) *tonite*
Tonight is the nite (passin naturals on motherfuckers) *tonite*
Tonight's the nite (yo, I'm unfadable) *tonite*
Tonight is the nite (ahh let's break it down, so I can get funky)

*tonite*

Ahh yeah
Givin em somethin they can roll on, hold on

Wake up Saturday morning and I got a headache
I can't believe that I'm sick from all the shit that I drank
*last nite* Soon as I felt it comin on
I should quit, it's true that a drunk ain't shit
To the man up above, the whole thanks I give
I'll never drink again if you just let me live
Mike P spoke to me and I said I couldn't call it
Call it Earl like a mother while I'm grippin the toilet
I need a 7-Up, because my head is spinnin
Round and round I think I better sit down
My homey Shot is alright, but I'm feeling faint
I guess he's used to it, but a nigga like Quik ain't
K is on the phone, and Teddy's at the door
Some fine ass bitches comin over at four
(I thought you ain't drinkin no more) Yeah right
Because as soon as they come, we doin the same ol shit *tonite*

Tonight's the nite (yeah) *tonite*
Tonight is the nite (straight gettin fucked up, heyyy) *tonite*
Tonight's the nite (fuck that pass me that pina colada) *tonite*
