A nu-metal band that I really appreciate, Disturbed released “Ten Thousand Fists” this year, which has received a lot of criticism, both positive and negative. My point of view? A fucking splendid album. A mix of the electronic hardness of the first “The Sickness” and the greater melody of “Believe”, the album (dedicated to the great Dimebag Darrell, as you can see on the last page of the booklet), never feels boring or repetitive: the title track has a catchy chorus, “Just Stop” and “Stricken” perfectly blend hardness with quieter parts. “Guarded” and “Deify” are the tracks that most recall the first two albums, with a great dose of electronics supported by David Draiman’s brilliant voice. Wonderful “Sons Of Plunder”, my favorite track, and “Land Of Confusion”, a Genesis cover (recently also done by In Flames), is also well executed. The other tracks on the album are not bad either, from the last “Avarice” to “Decadence”, from “I’m Alive” to “Forgiven”, from “Sacred Lie” to “Pain Redefined”. The only downside is the ballad “Overburdened”, which is somewhat so-so...
Summing up, the album is excellent; the quality of the songs is top-notch and the performance of frontman Draiman is phenomenal, as is that of guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and new bassist John Moyer. The true and only flaw (but not too much) of the album is that it perhaps sounds a bit too similar to previous works (and it’s inevitable, alas) and I don’t think there is much time left to change their sound. Fortunately, Disturbed know how to play really well, and so these little issues are only picked up by those who aim to badmouth an album.
Sublime.
The album is a worthy middle ground between 'The Sickness' and 'Believe', picking characteristics from both but creating something new.
David Draiman delivers another great vocal performance, moving from sharp screams to truly convincing clean and melodic moments.
