THE REVIEW

In my personal journey titled "Discovering the Ultra Brutal", the American Disgorge cannot be missing, definitely not to be confused with the Mexican ones or others. The band, now famous in the underground, is dedicated to Brutal Death influenced by bands like Dying Fetus and Suffocation, but further extreme, creating precisely Ultra Brutal Death Metal.

The characteristics of this band are first of all an extremely intricate sound, supported by truly excellent technique, and a low and guttural growl. Besides the various line-up changes, the band has also made a style change, further extreme their sound, making it more reflective and reinforcing the technique, these characteristics have made it one of the most extreme bands in the scene (in my opinion). I am here to talk about the band's second full-length, "She Lay Gutted".

This album can be defined in a certain sense as an "Old School Ultra Brutal Death Metal Album", being very influenced by the fathers of the genre, but above all for being one of the pillars of the entire subgenre. The album begins with a tremendous blast of blast beats. The guitars and bass have been lowered further compared to other Brutal Death albums, in order to remove even more melody within the work itself. In line with guitars and bass is the growl, one of the lowest and slimiest ever heard. The CD continues with increasingly varied and schizophrenic rhythms, going from slow to very fast parts, supported by an extraordinary drummer, the true leader of the band, who is, in my very humble opinion, one of the best drummers in the genre. The guitar riffs are sharp as a lawnmower (I hope you get the idea), a scratchy sound made of very complicated riffs, with varied use of harmonics, spanning the entire fretboard while always maintaining that thick and dark sound. The bass is a very present part of the overall sound of the album itself, cavernous, massive bass lines, played with violence. The themes dealt with are always the same, pure ultragore, although later Disgorge will move on to longer and more complicated lyrics (which still deal with the same things though). In any case, it is an album from 1999, where brutal, although already shaped and developed, was still a "novelty" and did not fall into the repetitive and overdone.

I believe that Disgorge is an excellent band, one of the most inspiring and representative of the genre, they have created their own rhythms, a wall of sound that distinguishes them from many bands that, due to a lack of innovation and personal expression, are destined to remain in the shadows. In any case, a pillar of Brutal, a must-have.
