THE REVIEW

There are bands that, despite the quality of their music, never get the recognition they deserve, to the detriment of others that, offering lower-level music, instead find success.

This has been the fate of Disbelief, a band that surely deserved much more, as they bring a very unique proposal, even while playing in a genre like metal, where there often seems to be embarrassing stagnation. Their mentors are definitely Neurosis, but unlike the latter, Disbelief shorten the song lengths, resulting in less claustrophobic and more impactful tracks. We could define their music as a sort of Psychedelic Death Metal.

Spreading The Rage was released in 2003 and is their masterpiece. The thirteen tracks that make up this work manage to be violent as the genre requires, but at the same time they are hypnotic, thanks to the splendid melodies that the two guitarists construct in their dissonant weaves. The drumming is surgical, avoiding unnecessary technicalities, contributing to the groove. What strikes the most is Karsten Jager's voice, which closely resembles the style used by Obituary, but I would dare to say even more desperate, with occasional clean vocals that allow a moment to catch a breath.

The extremely high quality of all thirteen pieces makes it very hard to choose among them, but if I absolutely have to mention one, then I must name "No More Lies," a mid-tempo where psychedelic arpeggios alternate with acid metal outbursts, and where Karsten Jager throws (this is the most apt term) all his despair at us.

Spreading The Rage is an album that absolutely needs to be re-evaluated because its value is extremely high, and all lovers of a certain type of metal, more experimental and avant-garde, should at least listen to it once. I'm sure they would fall in love with it.
