The Disavowed are a Brutal Death Metal band from the Netherlands and, in my opinion, they represent one of the most promising bands in the genre, despite not having released anything since 2001.
This album, called 'Perceptive Deception', indeed dates back to that year. The Brutal Death of these 5 guys is very much inspired not only by the classic Brutal bands but also by Pyaemia, a band that produced the excellent Cerebral Cereal. The guitar riffs merge and intertwine, yet always maintaining the melody, if it can be called that. The drummer beats rhythm after rhythm on the snare and cymbals, the band doesn't venture into many slow breaks, preferring speed. The bass, as almost always happens, sticks to the classic style of Brutal Death, which means fast, cavernous, and dark. The technical abilities of the musicians can certainly not be defined as low, complex rhythms and interesting passages follow one another, making this album excellent from a technical point of view as well. One certainly cannot fail to mention the vocalist's growl, guttural and rotten, focusing less on depth and more on a tone that makes it almost filtered.
The 9 tracks of the album vary from 5 minutes to 2 minutes, the rhythms change and follow each other while maintaining a certain personal style. Despite the meager discography, the band has made a name for itself in the underground scene, with collaborations with bands like Cannibal Corpse and live performances that have been excellent in the eyes of many, like the curious fact that the growler, in some shows, sang upside down over the audience or even in the middle of the mosh pit, certainly a great effort, but it helped create a certain admiration among many fans, who are fascinated by "feats" like this. The group, however, must also be credited according to me for having inspired, in their small way, many bands of the genre. Just think of the Italian Septycal Gorge, whom I have already reviewed, whose growl seems very similar to this, sure, someone might talk about coincidences, but even the band's entire sound is strongly indebted to them.
Sure, I'm not talking about a seminal band, as they too are inspired by the greats of the genre, I'm talking about a group that has proposed something serious, an excellent product that doesn't just add to the avalanches of poor quality albums produced by some perhaps not very inspired bands. I therefore invite the Disavowed to continue but, above all, to release a new album, we are all waiting for it.
