THE REVIEW

1993. The Nirvana has just broken through, metal is struggling, rock in general is searching for a new identity. It seems that, as in the punk era, there is something that needs to be removed, the embellishments, the excessive glam-rock, what does not reflect the idea of grunge and new rock, and the Dire Straits seem to be among the predestined victims of this reshuffle.

Yet, in what would be their last promotional tour for a new album, the band led by Mark Knopfler delivers their best and often sells out. The show presented in this live recording was recorded half in Paris and half in Rotterdam, but the effect is splendid.

The opening song is "Calling Elvis", which starts slowly and quietly only to suddenly rise and continue in a continuous crescendo, especially in the second part, where Mark and the others improvise heavily, with a series of impressive and enjoyable solos. Then comes the cheerful "Walk Of Life", clean and well done, but perhaps it adds nothing to the live performance. Then "Heavy Fuel" is a burst of pure adrenaline that does not taper off until, with two drum beats, the saxophone of "Romeo And Juliet" suddenly starts, an absolute masterpiece in this performance, heartfelt, sweet, and heartrending. Next comes another concert classic, "Private Investigations", simply brilliant, perfectly maintaining suspense in the long final piece.

"Your Latest Trick" is slightly different from the studio version, but equally beautiful and precludes a magnificent "On Every Street" which has an extended tail by Knopfler and his companions making it distinctly superior to the studio version. "You And Your Friend" is perhaps an unnecessary track, beautiful as well, but nothing special. "Money For Nothing" lacks the intro, unfortunately, but it is much more wild and fast than the original and is one of the best tracks of this LP which closes with a magnificent and sumptuous version of "Brothers In Arms", an absolute masterpiece, which, after the part that is also in the studio, rises to a series of literally breathtaking, poignant solos, that splendidly close this record which has as its only flaw the absence of "Sultans Of Swing".

A definitive live in my opinion, which remains among the most beautiful pages of a band that stopped too soon and of all rock in general.

Summary by Bot

Dire Straits' 1993 live album On The Night captures the band's pinnacle during their final tour. Mark Knopfler’s guitar work shines throughout, with emotional performances of classics like "Romeo and Juliet" and "Brothers in Arms." Despite the absence of "Sultans of Swing," the album offers a powerful, beautifully executed show that outshines the studio recordings in many moments.

Anybody who finds nothing to love here, has either got problem with the essential fabric of rock and roll or cloth ears.

The ten minutes of "Romeo And Juliet" don’t sound like a story already heard, but like a splendid composition revisited and up-to-date.

"Mark Knopfler towers over anything that stands in his way, devours it, the balding maestro... has now, like never before, become the creator of his world of notes."

"'Romeo And Juliet' sounds more majestic than ever, an eternal declaration of desperate love that will make people dream as long as there is good in this world."
