This album represents a turning point in the career of the "Die Apokalyptischen Reiter"; in fact, while already in the previous "All you need is love" the group had begun to open its symphonic-death sound to some contaminations, it is here that the subsequent path of the band is traced, which will lead them to greater use of German for the vocals and to an increasingly melodic and hybrid musical proposal.

Even though the death component has been reduced, including vocally with greater use of clean vocals, the typical elements of their music are still present, such as the alternation between more tranquil moments and others more intense; there is also the continuous pursuit of the keyboard that with its plots creates a melodic carpet on which the various pieces are layered, but (and here I want to reassure the die-hard metalheads who shiver at words like keyboard and melody, especially when linked to the term death/black) it always remains functional and mostly discreet, without spilling over into pretentiousness and bad taste. There are also more canonical pieces, but no less enjoyable, true rides made of riffs, screaming, and double bass drum, such as the opener or "Ride on". But the band's eclecticism comes out in pieces such as "Terra Nola", a song full of pathos and epic infusions; "Baila conmigo" sung in Spanish and describable as a cross between a ballad and a tango seasoned with ample doses of electric guitar; "Du kleiner wicht", strongly folk and with a medieval flavor; or "Fatima", with oriental influences.

There are also more reflective moments thanks to "Das paradies", a slow and contemplative ballad with an almost pop aftertaste. The album finally closes with a cover of "Master of the winds" by Manowar, of which the group has always declared themselves fans (what can you do, nobody's perfect...).

In summary, it is a fine album, the variety of tracks will hardly bore you, and the songs are all inspired; incredibly, the group will succeed in repeating the feat in subsequent albums, increasingly diversifying their sound (without losing a basic imprint that makes it traceable to the band) without quality drops, a risk that is far from abstract when putting a lot of irons in the fire. Recommended!

03   Sehnsucht (04:10)

04   Terra Nola (04:48)

Erst Wasser, dann Schatten, dann Lab.
