Nigredo is a journey into the deepest recesses of our soul, a journey where you know the beginning but not where it will lead you. Nigredo is the darkness within me, within you, within all of us.
The Diary Of Dreams are one of the most fascinating acts that the gothic scene has brought us in recent years; led by Adrian Hates, they have been able to craft true black gems. Nigredo opens with “Dead Letter” a progression that slowly grows, majestic and decadent. “Kinodrom” is introduced by a hypnotic keyboard riff, making way for the obsessive drum rhythm, culminating in a chorus of great emotional intensity. The album continues its descent into Adrian Hates' personal hell. Songs like “Reign of Chaos”, “Tales Of The Silent City”, “Portrait Of A Cynic” are imbued with an atmosphere as black as pitch. The highlight of the album is “Cannibals”, haunting in its melancholic melody, where the now resigned Adrian invites us to welcome the cannibals who eat away our lives.
Nigredo is not an album for everyone; it can make you fall in love with it, but you could also hate it, as there is no middle ground. The only thing I am sure of is that it cannot leave anyone indifferent. All lovers of more decadent and dark music should own this rare precious item to keep it preciously within themselves.
