"In perfetta solitudine": never was a title more truthful; indeed, after bidding farewell (sending home) to the great Miro Sassolini, Federico Fiumani found himself (as in the previous EP "Gennaio") taking on the roles of composer, lyricist, guitarist, and singer of the band, in short, he found himself: In perfect solitude, perfect for the result he managed to achieve: an album full of intimate yet beautiful songs.
The album in question represents for the writer the pinnacle of Fiumani's poetics, which lines up one classic after another. It starts with "In perfetta solitudine", a successful ride where cinephile quotes fit perfectly, then "Vai" with Federico's plea: GO anywhere is fine as long as you go, "Io amo lei" tells of a true love (I love her, not the other men she has had) where only the two people involved matter, not the rest, "Beato Me" might be the masterpiece of the album in which the author thanks for all the good he has had (Blessed are my arms if they are strong and can embrace you, blessed me, "I Giovani" or the difficulty of participating in a world that does not belong to us, a community that wants us but that we do not desire (I never wanted you by my side, what do you want from me), "Brutto Orso" tells the true story of Sonny, a boxer forced to go down by the boxing mafia during a heavyweight fight, Il Portiere ennobles the least appreciated role in the game of football, but for Federico, voice and guitar are enough to say that (When a goalkeeper saves a penalty, you can't help but put aside suspicions and love him) and we can only agree, "Diamante Grezzo" is nothing but a passionate and desperate cry for love (Diamond, please come bring me some water, Diamond, please come give some relief to this insatiable thirst), at the end Fiumani wants to have fun and repeatedly shoots pieces like "Irriconoscente" telling of wives who don't respect his bones, "Trecento Balene" instead, of how sucking sucked mints is no one's sport, "Grande e infinito" are the adjectives the poet uses to describe his love, in "Io ho freddo adesso" we see the limits of people (If your world stops at your words, if your sky stops at your balcony) but then at the bottom of the disc we find that "Verde" that makes us say: "this is a song by Federico Fiumani" an atypical love ballad without phrases like "I'd like to hold you close forever" and with an atypical but incisive final guitar.
Diaframma are a true treasure of Italian music and it's a real shame that so few know them, but an album like this deserves to be part of every collection of any good listener.
