It is well known that America is a country full of crazies and visionaries. Among all these crazies and visionaries, we find our friend Glen Benton, leader of Deicide. Our big buddy is a pure Satanist; in fact, he sacrifices goats to Satan daily, participates every week in black masses singing in the choir, and does many other interesting things that might make some Christians wrinkle their noses. Besides engaging in these excellent activities, Glen Benton is the leader of Deicide, a great brutal/death metal band that in the early '90s produced true milestones for our favorite genre.
Deicide, released in 1990, is the debut album of this devastating band that, alongside Death, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, and Obituary, helped spawn death metal. Drawing inspiration from the early albums of Death, Morbid Angel, and Slayer, the group formed by our Satanist friend Glen Benton—who has one of the most destructive growls in the death metal scene and also provides an excellent bass performance, proving he is not the usual singer-bassist who only sings and does not play bass—along with Eric and Brian Hoffman on guitars who grind out continuous killer riffs, and Steve Asheim, who proves to be one of the best drummers in the genre with varied and excellent drumming, released this belch on Napalm Records that will serve as a bible for many future death groups.

Our big buddy Glen Benton also takes care to write always very detailed and original lyrics ("Satan will be the new master of the world," "Christians will be exterminated," etc.), in short, the lyrics are not very interesting (they put me to sleep) but what can you do?? Glen Benton besides being a musical genius is a madman who believes he can see Satan even in the toilet. The album opens with the devastating "Lunatic Of God's Creation", a drum shot at a thousand (typical of brutal) is followed by the powerful growl and at times scream of the imposing Glen Benton, followed by the slower but no less destructive "Sacrifical Suicide", "Oblivious To Evil" remains a slow track that gradually builds in violence accompanied by the scratchy distortions of the Hoffman brothers until it returns to slower rhythms and ends, "Dead By Dawn" in my opinion is the best of the album and one of the best tracks ever written by Deicide where scratchy guitars and destructive drums are joined by Glen Benton with an almost scream-like, terribly expressive growl completing the beauty of this track, Blaspherion after a brief guitar intro bursts with violence and brutality with the human metronome Steve Asheim's drumming, the album's title-track is excellent and showcases the potential of every band member, "Carnage In The Temple Of The Damned" is one of the best tracks on the album where Benton's usual castrated troll voice makes the difference, followed by the hammering "Mephistoles" and the furious "Day Of Darkness" until it reaches "Crucifixation" which starts with a powerful guitar riff and where subsequently the hammering drums of Asheim and Benton's usual inhuman growl enter to complete one of the best episodes of the CD.

Deicide, after this great album, will continue with the masterpiece that is Legion and the good Once Upon The Cross, later after a long crisis in 2005, Scars Of The Crucifix was released, which is a partial return to the band's primordial sound. Deicide is a great album and a milestone of death.
