Incandescent matter, this is what emanates from the third album dated year 2000, of the group led by Chino Moreno. When music takes on such structured forms, talking about guitar riffs, rhythm sections, and production is somewhat reductive. I will try here to give you an as objective as possible account. Through the eleven tracks contained in “White Pony” (Maverick), one is transported into a whirlwind of emotions. “Feticeitìra”, “Digital Bath”, “Knife Party”, to randomly name three, are tracks destined to remain strongly rooted in the mind of every listener, by virtue of a crystal-clear sound exalted by the production of Terry Date (familiar to those who understand heavy music), and atmospheres that range from the most extreme metal to Pink Floydian psychedelia, making this CD a masterpiece in its own right in the vast "alternative rock" scene.
Throughout their career, the group has never made an album identical to the previous one, but it's as if this "White Pony" encapsulates the sum of all the elements that have made the group "popular". Chino's voice can reach truly high levels of pathos and intensity, blending wonderfully with Stephen's guitar, and especially with Abe's intensity, a drummer who, having an infinite number of rhythmic solutions in his wrists (Jazz/metal/funk), gives that extra gear to elevate the general sound far above average. Anything more seems superfluous to add, to be passed down to future generations!
White Pony is certainly one of my favorite CDs and undoubtedly the masterpiece of the Sacramento quintet.
Buy it, listen to it until your stereo melts, and then you’ll agree it’s really so!
"The artistic peak of 'Digital Bath' will never be reached again in the band’s future productions."
"The muffled melodies of 'Change' project a particular sequence: a white horse galloping carefreely in the middle of this seemingly infinite space."
